hankies
These pieces were created some time ago and were brought out earlier this week for a 'one to one' Zoom session I was having with a member of my class group.
I was so happy to see them again so thought I would share with you.
All of these pieces have been worked on 'vintage' hankies which have been cut up and joined to other pieces, some of them with Liberty print bindings.

titivations
It's been an embellishment week in class this week. It will be next week too.
So far we have embroidered prairie points, dangly chain things and hand embroidered ribbon.
The pieces we are creating are suitable for finished fabric works and artist books so it's a win win.
I am particularly enamoured with the embroidered ribbon and also the fact it is stitched in such a way that I can cut lengths from it without ot falling apart!

a wrap for an artist book
This piece, the woven, embroidered ribbon piece was inspired by an old photograph of a similar woven ribbon surface I made some time ago.
It gave me an itch to make more and this little artist book needed a wrap so hey presto.
It still needs work but I'm on it.
I've been a bit quiet this week. There is so much going on here at the moment and it's likely I will be quiet again this weekend.
However you are spending yours have a good one.

developing lace cloth
Lace cloth, I always say this but I'm going to say it again......I forget how much I love working on this fabric when I am working on other things, then I start with this again and fall in love for the millionth time.
The smaller of these pieces is new, the bigger piece a sample from some time ago. I am however working on that 'old' piece as I realised there was so much more I could do with it.

more colour sampling with stitch
Thank you so much for all the amazing messages regarding my last post.
Todays work is more sampling of colour with stitch but on a much smaller scale.
These pieces were worked at the same time as the larger pieces.
The large ones measure ten by seven inches, these are much smaller, only four by three inches.
I have been asked if these will be for sale at some point. I'm sorry but no, I keep these type of samples for reference, for future classes and my own personal collection.
I do however have one little embroidered gingham book for sale here.
I hope you enjoy looking at this little collection today. Next time you see them I hope they will be in book form.

sampling colour with stitch
I started these stitch samples a couple of months ago in the last sewing circle class.
They were waiting for a 'resolution', just samples on blue gingham, not backed, not resolved.
Yesterday they found homes on more gingham, gingham mounts stitched simply around all four sides with running stitch.
I'm a little bit in love.
Now I have to decide the next step. How to store them, preserve them. I'm thinking some kind of book. (as if you couldn't guess that, it's always a book ha ha)
I'll keep you posted.

the possibilites
I've been making a lot of lace cloth over the past week as part of 'sewing circle' and today I want to say to the girls in class......if you are struggling, threads snapping, anxiety ridden then look at the possibilities, keep going! Practice, practice, practice.
In this artist book are layers of paper, layers of lace cloth embellished with buttons, sequins, beads and hand stitch. The page with the light blue cloth at the edge is one of my favourite ever pages.
All these elements on their own would not cause a second glance but put them all together.......

three little books
Three little hand embroidered cloth books finished and now listed in the shop here.
I hesitated with these, selling them at this time I mean. The reason for that is I was asked to teach and exhibit in France this year but had to decline because of Covid and our local restrictions. I did however ask to be considered for next year and hoped to take these with me. Since then there has been huge interest in these pieces whenever I show them on here so I figure if I do get asked to go to France again I can make more. (it's a long shot that I will be asked, I'm not holding my breath but you never know)
I also want to say thank you to the recent late comers to class. It's great to have you there! It's not too late for anyone else to join us either and if you are even slightly tempted you can read more here.
I hope you are all having a good weekend. It's cold and wet here but I'm not going anywhere. I am knitting and making lace cloth, staying warm inside!
Meanwhile.....a very short video with visuals of these three little books.

more from the cabinet and progress with gingham
I spoke about my recent, live cabinet reveal in this post. Following on from that here are more images form the same exercise.
Some of you have commended my bravery at emptying a cabinet live on Zoom. I have several cabinets, this is the tidy one ha ha.
I definitely wouldn't attempt it with one of the others.
The work from here has progressed. The embroidered buttons have now been tied in place and all that's left to do is put all these pieces together and my little book of stitch sampling will be finished.

page excitement
My excitement levels are growing.....first of all because I hadn't realised just how many of these little paper books I had, crammed little books, embroidery, paper, beads, tabs, tags....all kinds of lovely things. (I only realised this when I emptied my cabinet live on Zoom. I spoke about that here)
Since then I have been looking at these more regularly and the excitment comes from knowing that very soon I will be putting another one of these together in class.
I have buttons at the ready along with other little snippets of things.

finishing touches
More buttons have been made, gingham buttons this time. These will be used to adorn pages in this cloth book, one may find it's way on to the inside cover.
The class where I used gingham is finished, my love for this work isn't.
There is still almost a yard of gingham ribbon to create, to hand embroider too.

just a page
A few weeks ago I took part in a Zoom meeeting where I emptied a cabinet and spoke about the contents of that cabinet.
Can you tell the cabinet mostly held artist books?
The large book here wasn't actually inside the cabinet, it was on a shelf below so I apologise for not showing this at the time.
Since that zoom meeting I have been looking closely at this work and it still inspires.
I feel lucky to have these resources.

a scrap of lace and some stitched paper.
There has been a lot of searching for scraps going on here over the past couple of weeks. You will have noticed that in this post and this post in particular.
The tiniest piece of stitched cloth or paper can lift any piece of work. In the images today those little scraps are enhancing a page in one of my artist books.
(the pieces I speak of are top right of the right hand page here)
These images also validate the reason for my 'never throw anything' away habit!
I hope you have the same habit.
*******
There are only two days until my new class begins. (the scrap gathering has a lot to do with that).
Please take a look here for more information and if you are already signed up...a huge thank you!

how to fill a page
I've been playing with the little pieces I showed you in this post, considering how they might live within embellished pages.
I can't recommend highly enough having a stash of pieces like this because in addition to being useful they are wonderfully satisfying to create, a lovely way to spend an hour or so.
In other news....the blanket is almost finished! When I eventually get there you will be the first to know.
There is so much going on here at the moment hence my absence these past few days......... my new class begins on Monday and I have already made the first buttons!
My husband is having major surgery next week, we are prepping for that, (he has to self isolate meaning I do too so I have a lot of time on my hands) and I am not allowed to visit him because of Covid restrictions....that isn't a good thing at all.......it's going to be hard....I will have to keep busy with embroidery.
That means however, there is no excuse for me to be slacking.
Finally....if you are registered for the new class you should have received an email from me this morning. If you didn't receive that please let me know.

gathering
Just like in this post I am gathering, collecting pieces which will fill pages of artist books.
I will be creating new little artist books very soon so I'm getting prepared.
There is some stuff going on here this week and I will be missing. It's hopefully only temporary.
My shop will remain open and if you are registered for the new class I have good news, I have made our videos for the first week over the last two days.
I'm getting good at this 'be prepared' stuff!

recent buys and a crochet update
As promised, an update on my crochet progress. It has grown quite a bit since you last saw it but I'm not even half way there yet.
I'm alternating daily between embroidery and crochet but this weekend the crochet will take a back seat as I prep for my new class which begins a week on Monday.
There are new supplies here too. Some are for the new class, namely the button making things. The Cigarette silks were purchased 'just because' and I can never have too much thread.
As you probably know, my 'go to' thread is Coton a Broder 16, colour B5200.
Shock horror though, there wasn't any size 16 where I usually buy my threads. Instead I bought the size 20 which is the same shade number but finer. It's white, it's Coton a Broder, two out of three isn't bad.

lace and paper
I apologise that I don't have anything new to show you today but although these pieces weren't created recently they are very much inspiration for what is coming next for me.
Creatively I am a bit all over the place at the moment.
Work is continuing on this piece, I am sampling for my new class (that's where today's images come in), I am crocheting and have also casted on some knitting!
I'm certain you all know what this kind of juggling is like so am confident you are all with me in spirit!

a front cover and two new pages
I'm not constantly working on this piece, this cloth book of embroidered samples. By that I mean I don't pick it up every day. If you are wondering why it's taking me so long that's the reason.
I am alternating each day between embroidery and crochet at the moment.
When I am on an embroidery day I could be working on this little book or doing prep for my next class like I shared here yesterday.
Yesterday was embroidery day and the front cover of this was embroidered as were two new pages.
There are still two pages needed before this can be finished and a lining needs to be pieced for the front cover.
Today is crochet day and I will show you blanket progress next time.

titivations
Following on from my last post, I have been creating little embellishments, small pieces of embroidery and patchwork using paper and cloth.
Having a collection of these pieces to hand is essential when I create a new artist book. They fill pages, they are extra adornment.
The pinned piece at the bottom of the image is waiting for hand stitch. I think I will use loopy bullion knots on that one.
More pages have been put together for my next sample book too.
The crochet? I am making progress and will share that soon.

embroidery for an artist book
This little white piece has been purposely created to fill a page in a hand made artist book.
The rest of my weekend will be spent doing more of this in prep for my next class 'October 2021 Sewing Circle'.
By more of this I mean embellishing little scraps of cloth, adding lace, beads, colour and stitch.
We will be putting a couple of little books together in this class so I will need something to start filling them with.
Meanwhile, the crochet is unfinished as is my little cloth book.
I'm juggling.

embroidery and crochet
Crochet? It's ok you haven't come to the wrong blog.
If you missed the news.......I am expecting two grandchildren in the new year.
(I have to keep repeating that to myself, I still can't quite believe it. Needless to say we are completely over the moon.)
What you see here is a baby blanket in progress, pattern and colours chosen by mummy number one.
I have to tell you, this one is quite an undertaking. 157 chain foundation row and around 200 rows of crochet. If I go missing you know why.
I do have plans for tiny knitted matinee coats, let's hope this mammoth blanket doesn't prevent those happening!
I best get a move on.
The embroidery? More pages and a front cover for my next little stitch sample book.
I am trying to rotate my work, one day crochet, the next day embroidery.
So far it's working.
(If you are registered for October 2021 Sewing Circle you should have received an email from me this morning. Please let me know if you didn't!)

plans
A post about my next class, 'October 2021 Sewing Circle'.
A gathering of like minded people who share a love of cloth, embroidery, thread and the opportunity to let their imaginations wander whilst passing needle and thread through cloth, paper and lace.
Thank you to those of you who have signed up already, I appreciate your support for this tiny business more than I can say.
Today it is a closer look at my plans.
It can be difficult to assess the needs of those who wish to learn embroidery or those who wish to extend their embroidery skills and there are people who just want to be creative in any form yet may also wish to fulfill that need within the setting of a group, a supportive and encouraging environment.
I can one hundred percent guarantee the presence of support and encouragement in this class.
From the very beginning of my 'online teaching' life the willingness of these groups to embrace the chance for friendship and sharing has completely blown me away.
The introduction of 'Zoom' sessions in my last class confirmed for me the special nature of these groups.
Although not compulsory, (nothing is ever compulsory in my classes), the Zoom sessions were popular and something the group came to look forward to.
Going back to what I said about it being difficult to assess the needs of those who may join my classes. Some classes are focused on set outcomes, artist books for example. Other classes are more open, free, fly on the wall experiences where anything can happen.
October 2021 sewing circle is a mixture of specifics. By that I mean there will be set outcomes from this class, a timetable for the creation of specific creative pieces.
In two weekly blocks I will cover four separate creative outcomes.
(Two weeks is the timescale for me to deliver the instructional videos. You will have access to those videos forever, you will not have a two week deadline. The deadlines are mine alone.)
The following images are an indication of predicted outcomes for this eight week course.
The pieces I create will not be identical to these pieces however the overall aesthetic will be the same.
And remember, you are not compelled to create the pieces I produce. Individual Zoom support is provided within the class timetable for advice and appraisal of any creative works of your choosing. If you do not wish to participate via Zoom then feedback is always available via email and our private online image sharing forum.
Our first two weeks will be all about buttons. Learn to hand embroider your own fastenings and adornments.
Button creation will be followed by lace, frothy, delicate lace.
Weeks five and six are when I will demonstrate several ideas for artist books.
We will finish with ideas for completing your hand embroidered works, pieces that can also be used to adorn pages in your artist books, those final, finishing touches such as hand worked ribbons and bindings, puffs, toggles and decorative edges.

gingham and baby shopping
Yes, it's still all about the gingham. I've picked up where I left off when I went to London.
I had a completely different London experience this time, baby shopping as opposed to fabric, lace, ribbon, paper and bead shopping.
I also bought things that are sure to distract me over the coming weeks, this being one of them.
At the moment I am crocheting a blanket from that book. I may post progress of that on here at some point.
But, embroidery...gingham.
There are two new pages here for my next stitch sample book and the piece with the buttons is from sewing circle. It's my nod to my nanna's button tin and will form the lining of a pocket. You can see that in the last image here.

two finished and the start of the third.
The second embroidered stitch book I showed you yesterday is finished now, that makes two fully embellished little cloth books with the third in progress.
I have embroidered another little book over the past couple of months but haven't used gingham in that one, that's why it isn't shown here.
For the next book I am going to use the bolder Liberty print which I have used for the applique here.
The gingham is a smaller print too and it will be interesting to see how both those patterns live together.
I am going to London tomorrow for a few days.
Registration for my new class will remain open whilst I am away.
I'll see you on the other side. Stay safe x

web stitch....gingham, Liberty, hand embroidery
Gingham has featured a lot on here lately. That's because I have been making a table covering in 'sewing circle' inspired by memories of my nanna's. Those memories include gingham.
What particularly appeals to me in this work is how 'web stitch' appears to be perfect as a filling for those little squares.
(I'm hoping you notice the little isolated squares of web stitch dotted across the open gingham areas.)
The pieces here are 'ingredients' for my next cloth, stitch sample book.
I have one more page to embellish then I can start to put all this together.
Please take a look at my new class which begins in a few weeks.
This one is project specific which may appeal to some but as always in my classes you are free to work on any embroidery project, the guidance and support I provide remains the same whatever you decide to create!

This is the opposite edge of the cloth you saw here earlier this week.
I have used the hand embroidered ribbon from this post to cover seams and there are more embroidered gingham applique circles too.
Also here are the newest pages for my next little cloth sample book.
This little book will be pieced together in a similar manner to this one.
I'm almost there......

making progress
Gingham remains the dominant cloth here.
This table cover is my main focus at the moment.
If you remember, the embroidered gingham is being appliqued to a cut up and pieced vintage table cover.
In these images three pieces of embroidered gingham are completely finished, attached to the surface and edged with bullion and French knots.
One piece is partially edged and the final one is just pinned. I'm hoping to finish the last two this evening.

buttons, lace cloth, artist books and adornments
Whilst I have been absent (mostly) from this space I have been busy with 'sewing circle', arranging and participating in live chat, demonstrating embroidery process and hosting 'fly on the wall' videos.
I normally list new classes just as other classes are coming to a close. This isn't unusual, a lot of embroidery teachers list classes, fill their calendars twelve months in advance but this time I wavered. I wondered about perhaps not doing any more classes.
I then started to think 'but what are you going to do Karen?' and anyway, 'why are you even thinking that?'
What I do think though is 'fly on the wall' is perhaps too non specific.
So today I am launching a 'process specific' eight week class beginning in six weeks.
Over the course of eight weeks four specific uses for embroidery will be demonstrated with two weeks allocated to each.
Built into this programme will be the availability of private one on one, face to face mentoring (just you and me!) along with group 'get togethers'.
I realise a 'Zoom' aspect will be off putting for some but remember, this feature of the programme is not compulsory.
Sharing and discussion options will still be available to the whole group via the forum of a Private Flickr group.
I hope this new format appeals to you.
All the information is below.
October 2021 Sewing Circle.
Begins October 18 for 8 weeks.
Suitable for the beginner and the more experienced embroiderer.
This eight week class will focus on creative embroidery with a process specific timetable which is listed below.
Built into this programme is time for one
to one appraisal and feedback of your works in progress via Zoom,
private sessions where we can discuss your plans and your work in
progress.
There will also be an opportunity for group 'get togethers', again via Zoom.
Individual
Zoom appraisals of 20 minutes duration will be available twice during
our eight weeks as will group 'get togethers' of one hour duration.
These sessions will be timetabled once class begins and I can ascertain
the needs of the group and you as individuals.
Participation in the Zoom aspect of this
programme is entirely voluntary. You are under no obligation to
participate in this aspect of class if you choose not to do so.
Image sharing and group discussion opportunities will also be available in a private online forum.
The timetable below illustrates my plans week on week.
You are under no obligation to work on the same pieces as me. If there is a particular creative, embroidered project you would like to bring to class that is more than acceptable. I am happy to appraise and guide you with any project of your choosing.
WEEK ONE. Embroidered buttons.
WEEK TWO. Embroidered buttons.
WEEK THREE. Lace cloth.
WEEK FOUR. Lace cloth.
WEEK FIVE. Hand Embellished artist book.
WEEK SIX. Hand embellished artist book.
WEEK SEVEN. Decorative embroidered embellishments. Bindings, trims etc.
WEEK EIGHT. Decorative embroidered embellishments. Bindings, trims etc.
Please allow 24 hours from registration to receipt of a welcome mail.
If you are unfamiliar with 'Zoom' a video will be provided regarding its use prior to the start of class.
Access to all video resources is permanent.
Registrations are non refundable unless I have to cancel the course for any reason in which case monies will be refunded in full.

applique and hand embroidered ribbon
Last time I was here I spoke about how I couldn't share any work from class.
Today I can give you a glimpse........
This piece will be a table cover, inspired by memories of my nanna Sally and my nanna Beryl.
A table cover created using a vintage table cover as a base, a cut up and re pieced vintage table cover.
The large applique circles are embroidered prior to being attached here and I have a stack more waiting to be finished.
(the lemon applique is for a cloth book but lives well here I think)
The long strip? hand embroidered gingham ribbon for finishing touches.
I can't even calculate the time it takes to embroider this ribbon, I can only say it is a labour of love.

It's becoming a theme isn't it? Gingham mixed with embroidery and Liberty fabric.
There is my work from class of course but I can't show you any of that.
Meanwhile, in addition to the class work which I can't show you I am creating another of these little books.

bits and pieces
Hi, how is everybody?
I am easing myself back in here, sporadic posting, no plans as such but I intend to be around more often from now on.
Don't let that fool you into thinking all is well in my creative world.
It's not awful or terrible but apart from class which I LOVE and adore I am a little lost.
If anyone finds me can you give me a nudge?
The work today is a little bit of everything. The circular pieces are for aplique which I will add to a tablecover I am making in class.
The work on paper is a little stitched sketchbook, also for class.
The other pieces are for another stitched sample book.
In other news.....I have a badly inflamed, infected? gum which is making my whole face sore. Sympathy accepted....

gingham
I'm still surrounded by gingham here, gingham and table cloths and simple hand embroidery.
The piece in the foreground is a little stitched notebook in progress. I have just pieced a patchwork cover for that and am in the process of hand stitching into that pieced cloth.
I'm a little distracted these days, there has been amazing and happy news here.
My daughter is expecting a baby in January 2022, my son in February 2022. (not him personally, that would be something but you know what I mean!)
I am now in full on nanna mode and have made two baby quilts already! Go me.

popping in to say hello
Hi everyone, how are you? I thought I would just pop by to say hello and show you a little of what I have been up to.
This probably isn't normal service resuming but I do miss this place (and you).
The work here is evolving in 'interactive sewing circle'.
Inspiration for these pieces comes from my nanna Sally and my nanna Beryl, my memories of those women who played a huge part in my life.
The embroidery is simple, the cloth too (mostly)
Neither of those women would have had access to fine Liberty cloth so I am gifting them some of that lovely fabric within these pieces.
This class has been a revelation to me. The zoom meetings are inspirational, fun and so very supportive.
What a wonderful group of women has been assembled.
I take my hat off to each and every one of them and want to thank them for being part of this and most importantly making it work.

French knots and buttons
Another piece of my cloth book puzzle is finished.
Strips of Liberty fabric have been edged with French knots and laying between those are French knot flowers.
The pocket piece you have seen before, here. Then there were just threads nestled in the pocket, they are now joined by buttons which are also scattered on the white space.
I have two more pieces to embroider for this little book before I can begin to put it all together.
If you are registered for Interactive Sewing Circle which began today you should have received links and passwords from me earlier.
If you didn't receive those please let me know.

gathering
Today I'm gathering, assembling all my embroidery essentials, keeping them close for 'Interactive sewing circle' which begins tomorrow.
Registration for this brand new, exciting and scary venture is still open here.
I say scary because I am nervous. Parts of this online learning programme will be hosted 'live' via Zoom. I have a fear of cameras but I'm going to put my big girl pants on and embrace this experience.
I've been practicing. I've had countless test contacts with people from around the world. What could possibly go wrong? (famous last words)
You should know that participation in the Zoom aspect of this class is not compulsory. It's quite possible to be an active member of the group online without the video contact using our private Flickr image and discussion forum.
Demonstration video is available to everyone, to view in isolation away from Zoom.
When using Zoom it's also possible to be present without your image being visible to the group.
If you sign up to class the 'how to' will be explained to you.
So how have you all been? I have been missing in action....more of that after the images....
For the past week I have been here, recharging the batteries.
We had a restful, peaceful week and I highly recommend you take some time to look at the images.
This is a very beautiful part of England which I have neglected for too long.
One of my nanna's was born here and having visited as a child it took me far too much time to go back.

a second pocket and a new page
Another pocket, you can never have too many.
I'm not sure I will store skeins of thread in this one, it's just a test.
Maybe there will be buttons in there?
There is a new page too.
Rows of French knots and web stitch with three little fabric buttons.
(if you scroll down to past posts on this page you will see more of this little stitch sample book)
If you are registered for Interactive sewing circle you should have received an email, a video from me this morning. If you didn't receive that can you please let me know.

to titivate
Titivate, a word I use a lot.
The images today are past work labelled in my category list under 'titivate'.
-
make minor enhancements to.
I mentioned recently how I seem to get the most joy from finishing edges with buttons, puffs, beads and other adornments and they certainly fall into the titivate category.

a pocket
I did mention yesterday that I thought this little book would benefit from a pocket.
Here it is. What do you think?

two pinned pieces
Yesterday I was wondering about adding colour reference labels to my web stitches. You can see here that I decided to go for it in the end.
Another piece is finished too and these are pinned ready to be placed back to back for the next page in my little cloth embroidery sample book.
When I have finished here...online....I will be putting two new pages together and I'm thinking this little book needs a pocket.
Watch this space.

applique and web stitch with rows of beads and sequins
Embroidery is continuing on four inch squares of silk. I do hope you are enjoying this little visual of how my smallest stitched sample books evolve and come together.
There are two new pages here, one with applique and web stitch the other studies of stitch, beads and sequins with a row of Turkey work thrown in!
I'm considering adding labels to the web stitches for colour identification......I'm thinking.

If you are registered for 'interactive sewing circle' you should have received an email from me this morning regarding our live Zoom sessions.
Later today I will be sending another email with more details about our twelve week adventure.
If you do not receive those by the end of the day can you please let me know.
Also, my Guinea pigs.....you know who you are...did you get your invitations to our late night get together tomorrow?

two more
I have embroidered two additional pieces to accompany the work I showed you yesterday.
There is a beautiful weight to these little stitched samples when the binding begins.
Two pieces are placed back to back and joined with either running stitch or buttonhole stitch at the edge.
Before a little sample book can be completely finished I usually need about ten of these embroidered four inch squares along with a front and back cover.
At the moment I have five, almost half way there.

four inches square
The start of a new mini sample collection with the embroidered area measuring four inches square.
These pieces invariably end up in book form, little books of stitched samples which are a joy to leaf through and which never fail to inspire.
I'm killing time but in a productive way.......killing time until my zoom class begins.
I am trying so hard to stop myself starting work for that class and by creating these little samples I am also allowing myself thinking time.

A cloth for Nanna
A cloth for my nanna, for both of them.
For the women who influenced and inspired me whilst I was growing up.
This will be my theme for 'interactive sewing circle'.
There are only a few places remaining, you can read more here.
If you are already registered for this class I will mail you on Monday 21st June to discuss my plans in more detail and to provide a list of suggested fabrics, threads etc.

Suffolk puffs, edges.
The little pillow from yesterday has flown the nest, sold....thank you!
Today there's another one. These came together pretty quickly once they were damp stretched.
I don't know if I get more pleasure from creating the main pieces or from creating the edge titivations.
This one has Suffolk puffs wrapping round a corner.
I'm sure my love of these edge adornments comes from my love of the fiddly.
This one is now in the shop.
There won't be any more for the foreseeable future because later today I am going to piece my first cloth for 'Zoom sewing circle'.
I delisted that class on Friday as I had reached my minimum number of members. That has allowed me to begin prep for class.
I can now open registration again to fill the final few places so if you are interested please read more here.
I am going to speak about this class in more detail later this week too.
