For centuries women have used cloth as a tool of comfort and as an expression of beauty within their homes. Creating cloth for warmth, cloth for shelter, our female predecessors embellished these linens with hand stitch using laborious and time consuming techniques thereby enhancing the functional beauty of objects which enveloped and protected their families. Inspired by these women I hope my creations pay tribute to and recognise the devotion expressed in cloth by our female ancestors .

''the use of traditional often time consuming process alludes to the devotion of a mother''. c K. A. Ruane 2007

small....

Sunday was very relaxing working on these tiny sections of my cloth. I extended the padded areas and added buttonhole lace, they look like little cups...the three cutwork motifs will have added embellishment before that piece is complete. Hopefully that will happen today sometime and be damp stretched overnight.
The weekend also involved some admin for me . I have had a few latecomers to embroider, embellish create, they are signed up and stitching now but I have placed that class on ''sold out'' mode this morning. We are in week four and although access to resources is indefinite I feel with that particular course interaction within the working group is essential and a huge part of the whole experience. I will be running it again later in the year but for now I am concentrating on creating the new class, 'extending embellishment', hopefully there will be more news about that later this week.
With regard to the button class...I have now listed that as a ''learning package''. Three month access to all resources, blog etc along with printable PDF documents. I felt it best to deliver that in timetabled format...e mail with weekly headings enabling you to work to a three week timetable if you wish or alternatively enabling you to dip in and out over the three months if you prefer. This is a comprehensive package and excellent value in my opinion....after all you get me forever!!! I am so cheap...in many ways....
There is a link to that top right on this blog or you can go here and browse.
Now I must clean, my work room/dining room/computer room really needs to be acquainted with a duster!!!
(and I cleaned the oven yesterday!! yikes...domesticity...)

unfinished......

There are several unfinished things hanging around here now. First there is yesterdays piece, there is toe wrap two and there is this. I had planned to finish the two fragments before I go away but I doubt that will happen now. I did get all the fastenings put on the back of my third hook and eye piece last night, they now need to be damp stretched which will take me up to tomorrow . The lining will hopefully go in tomorrow night so I should be sorted by thursday, a day to spare, phew. As for today, well if I get the lining ready to go in, stretch the backs, do my ironing, then I may, just may get yesterdays piece finished tonight ready for your perusal tomorrow....They have forecast gloom, grey and rain for wednesday though so the images won't be easy...so many things to think about. Oh and I have to dye my hair too, my roots are shocking!!
I had a lovely suprise in the post today which distracted me from my ''to do'' list...not complaining though.
Gina sent me the most beautiful little tatted flowers and the cutest, tiny pastel coloured hooks and eyes I have ever seen. I doubt you will see them in my work, they are far too precious, they will live in my ''special'' glass treasure cabinet. If the sun comes back anytime in the next week or so I must share them all with you. Trust me, you will be green with envy!!

backed and edged....

This piece is now backed, edged and available. They do look so very different when they are finished completely, more whole somehow, a little more substantial. I have made very little progress with my blank canvas, remember? I did take a picture of it to show you how far I've got but then the uploading images process happened without me remembering and I'm not going there again, not after yesterday!
I definitely won't be here tomorrow, a little crisis going on that needs attending to. I have so many people to get back to aswell, I haven't forgotten you and I will try over the next few days, please bear with me. Have a lovely day. x

white, white, white

I think I'm all talked out.....lost count of how may in a row this is, a measure of my OCD is that I feel I've got to be here every day now, I've set a precedent, it's becoming a habit a bit like when you were little and you weren't allowed to stand on the cracks in the pavement. Or was that just me? Anyway, I give you white, more white, lots of white, bet you're sick of white. Trouble is I'm not. This isn't finished yet, it sits waiting to be backed and then have titivated edges, most likely buttonhole lace because that's the particular bee I have in my bonnet at the moment. Then I have a plan.....yes more white but with a twist...... the twist is I won't use anything vintage this time. I am going to start with a square of pristine silk dupion, totally blank canvas and see if my imagination is still working. Actually I lie, I may use a tiny bit of old cloth if I cut holes in the dupion, just at the back of my little windows. is that o.k?

The eagle eyed amongst you will notice a picture repeat here. That's because I'm dim, mentally challenged. You have to forgive me, I've just learned to live with it.
Deanna posed a question/suggestion a couple of posts back about my name being too small on my images. Thing is I agonise over that. Basically it grieves me to have to put my name on them full stop. I don't want to spoil my pictures by having the text too obvious and the nice person inside me thinks that the copyright thieves will leave me alone now.....it remains to be seen and rest assured if any cropping goes on to get rid of my name I will definitely think again, after the mini breakdown that is. Well I think that's all for today, nothing else to say or bore you with. Be thankful for small mercies.

white on white

Are you sick of me yet? Every day posting getting you down? White on white giving you nightmares? I aplogise for both but I am just having so much fun. My embroidery has mostly happened in the evening this week, most of my days spent on this computer but 6 p.m. until 1a.m is quite a bit of stitching, only trouble is I can't get out of bed when the alarm goes off!! I feel like I'm living the life of a party animal without the party. Not complaining at all and every so often I flick a duster around or feed the thinnest looking family member so it looks like I'm attending to my housewifely duties too! This one is now you know where, I can never wait until I have a few, too impatient.

and can you see in the picture below.....I extended the buttonhole lace and connected it to the other edge making pockets!! Can you tell I am pleased with myself???

I popped to the shops this morning and look what I found, 2 beautiful pillow covers in a charity (thrift) shop for only £2.50, around $4 and these gorgeous offcuts of embroidered Broderie Anglaise for 20p around 30 cents each!!! How lucky am I.

Right, drum roll, I have drawn the pin winners. Sorry you couldn't all win and I'm afraid to report that I haven't had any luck on the lottery yet so you will have to wait on that one.
So could Jane from Looplou Adventures into Handicrafts, Rachel from Virtuoso Adventures and Judy from Discovering Textiles send me your postal details and these measly, scrawny, single packets of pins will be winging their way to you in no time.
Have a lovely weekend, I don't know if I'll be back tomorrow, depends if I get up when the alarm goes off!!
