For centuries women have used cloth as a tool of comfort and as an expression of beauty within their homes. Creating cloth for warmth, cloth for shelter, our female predecessors embellished these linens with hand stitch using laborious and time consuming techniques thereby enhancing the functional beauty of objects which enveloped and protected their families. Inspired by these women I hope my creations pay tribute to and recognise the devotion expressed in cloth by our female ancestors .

''the use of traditional often time consuming process alludes to the devotion of a mother''. c K. A. Ruane 2007

still in the hoop

Embroidering on lace for another section of my cloth.....I love this lace, it's so delicate. This piece actually has three backings as it is so fine and fragile. When I am working on it, holding it, it is so soft. There's still a long way to go with my cloth and we finish next week....technically. Instruction and demonstration finish next week but believe me there will be a lot of show and tell of ''where I am up to'' going on for at least two weeks after. My labels are ordered too, one of those will be going in the pocket the others in a drawer. I only need one but had to order a minimum amount, never mind, the recipient, (you know....the one with no internet?) is more than worth it.
My painting efforts went down well yesterday, thanks for that. I had planned to do a little more today but so far zero, zilch...the time has flown. Maybe later.....

another hoop....

Hoops....where would we be without them. More specifically where would I be without them, nowhere is the answer. Without them I wouldn't be able to embroider and this blog would basically be about nothing. Some might say it's already about nothing but at least there are pictures to look at....
I cannot believe how long this piece is taking me,,,,I will have grown a beard before it's finished. Good job I like it then....

in my hoop and on my table...

I am still contemplating but productively. Whilst the brain is ticking the fingers are working on toe wrap two...making progress on this. I am realising how delightful it can be to have colour and brightness in your work after weeks of white. That isn't intended as a negative towards white, merely a recognition of the benefits of colour. I think I may just concentrate on this for now, no new major projects yet. I am going away on holiday in early November and may plan something new and large whilst I am away.
For now, this will be enough...along with my mini class.

hoops and another online course....

Oh my...so many pieces on the go and there are rouleau loops strewn from one end of the room to the other aswell! All quiet then? Don't think so...I am on a mission to finish, back and titivate Helens cloth before the end of the week. Mustn't let my girls down....I have to do mine to show them how to do theirs if you know what I mean...These REALLY ARE the final two pieces for this cloth. I look, I want more, I make more...I'VE GOT TO STOP!!
Another reason I have to stop is that I have another class starting next Monday. In case it passed you by, been in that cupboard again have you? Lots and lots of information and details of how to register can be found here. I want to reiterate (and that's a big word for a Monday morning fuelled by sleep deprivation), again, I want to REITERATE...because I have been asked, honestly I have. This class will be posted over three weeks...BUT....all the resources will be available to you until December 24. So you can go at your own pace, no rush, take your time. It can also be accessed from anywhere in the world although I can't vouch for coverage in a cave for example. Phew, I think that's all the reiterating done for a day. What with titivating and reiterating I'm not quite sure what day it is!
So it's back to the hoops and the loops for me....what a lovely way to spend a day.....
and I almost forgot......Is that tatting I have there? The edge of an old hanky....please tell.
