For centuries women have used cloth as a tool of comfort and as an expression of beauty within their homes. Creating cloth for warmth, cloth for shelter, our female predecessors embellished these linens with hand stitch using laborious and time consuming techniques thereby enhancing the functional beauty of objects which enveloped and protected their families. Inspired by these women I hope my creations pay tribute to and recognise the devotion expressed in cloth by our female ancestors .

''the use of traditional often time consuming process alludes to the devotion of a mother''. c K. A. Ruane 2007

Artist books

Last time I was here I spoke about my collection of artist books.

This is merely a glimpse.

On my Typepad blog I had an artist book page.

It might be an idea to put one on here too.

It can be added to when new books are finished, creating a resource, a library.

If you have taken one of my past classes that were lost due to theTypepad shutdown....I am doing my best to collate all the videos and get them sent to you.

If however you are in desperate need of access to a particular class please let me know and I will try and help.

two from France

Two of these little stitched and titivated artist books made it home with me from France. If you want one they are now in the shop.
It seems I am consumed with all things ''ledger'' at the moment. We are working with ledgers, books, illustrations in ''stitching a story'' and I have plans which excite me regarding ledgers in another form...same principle, different presentation, different approach. It's quite possible I will begin work on that idea later today.
To all of you amazing, wonderful, patient people who have stuck by me through my silence, my non response to e malls and comments through the hectic weeks leading up to France....thank you. I am hoping to make a start on replying to you all later today. If I don't get round to you today it will definitely happen this week. Thank you a million times over for your willingness to keep turning up when all you get in return is zero...zilch....it's appreciated and then some.
Finally...if you are registered for Stitching a Story you should have received sign in information etc this morning. If you didn't receive that will you please let me know.

books, bags, labels, buttons

A glimpse for you of what I've been doing. There's been a bit of French printing going on as you can see. There's been a lot of stuff put in bags...(for protection in transit and for display). Cloth pieces such as pillows, pockets and wrapping cloths won't be going in bags.......but for travelling they will be wrapped in white acid free tissue and bubble wrap.
The little thread cards with the labels tied on with ribbon......they will very shortly have coloured thread wrapped on them for my workshops...pink and green to be precise.
Next on my ''to do''  list is exactly that, thread wrapping.....

for pages

Snippets, samples, scraps, paper, cloth.....pages for artist books. Three new pages were put together last night, gathering has happened for other pages. These artist books have now become ''urgently need to put together'' books as opposed to the ''as and when''  books they were a few weeks ago. Another fifteen pages (guessing here) are needed....wish me luck. One thing this should show you is that never throwing anything away is a good choice. Fabric snippets, offcuts come in handy for many things....including ledger work.
(The lace cloth marathon is nearing completion which is a huge relief. )

pages

These little books are filling up gradually...there's no rush, a few pages here and there as I get time. Well I say no rush, next week actually, around ten days left to make sure each one is crammed. It may be that next week I will need to make space for a ''book afternoon'', finishing these, adding more snippets of cloth and doodled paper. I plan on painting some paper scraps this afternoon to be added to these.  I will be taking an hour out from this and making little marks, floral marks with watercolour paint onto a blue speckled background. You will get to see my efforts when those little scraps of painted paper appear on these pages....

yesterday and today....

I wasn't here yesterday....two posts in one for you today....

There is a point to all this paper. Aside from it being quite pleasing on the eye it sparks ideas for stitch. I could take this further in so many ways...the button idea being just one of many.
It won't be happening today though. Today I am here...blowing away some cobwebs....

More pages have been filled in my little artist books. These follow on from these ones and these ones....piling samples, scraps of paper, snippets of cloth, interesting textures and these little books on the table means playtime for me and the actual ''putting together'' of the pages does not take long at all....it's the gathering which takes time, the selecting of embroidered scraps and lovely paper.
As you can see, occasionally I doodle on them too...

old books, old cloth

If you are on Facebook you will no doubt know that every day Facebook provides you with memories, things you posted in the past. Yesterday I was shown these, my memories for March 6. The shocking thing to me is that these were posted FIVE years ago. I had to share them. I honestly cannot believe that five years has gone by since these were made.
The cloth, the wrapping cloth, I see that daily. It lives on my sofa and keeps my feet warm in the morning or of an evening...hence its name....my ''toe wrap''. The books are long gone, the hexagons, the pages.....do you have one of these? How has it survived over the past five years? I would love to know.
Five years.....I'm astounded.
If you are registered for ''reinventing the page'' which begins tomorrow you should have received an e mail from me this morning. If you haven't received that please let me know.
