For centuries women have used cloth as a tool of comfort and as an expression of beauty within their homes. Creating cloth for warmth, cloth for shelter, our female predecessors embellished these linens with hand stitch using laborious and time consuming techniques thereby enhancing the functional beauty of objects which enveloped and protected their families. Inspired by these women I hope my creations pay tribute to and recognise the devotion expressed in cloth by our female ancestors .

''the use of traditional often time consuming process alludes to the devotion of a mother''. c K. A. Ruane 2007

scrunched.....

''scrunched'', great word. Could just as easily have been crumpled, crushed.......but definitely not ruched or folded or pleated. Just a handful of muslin randomly scrunched and added to a piece of embroidered paper. French knots have been added, edges have been added and I suppose it wouldn't be telling a lie to say that this piece is finished. I don't want to show it in its ''whole'' yet...I am waiting to finish more, show them all together. One thing for certain..this is so much fun and such a lovely project to work on. I can see cards, wedding invitations.....millions of uses. I don't think I am quite ready to go into the greetings card sector yet though so don't hold your breath.....
All in all then things got better after my strange Saturday morning. Paper has been pricked and stitched into submission and there was also a little bit of housework going on...namely cleaning glass in glass doors, 24 little windows per door...whoever thought they were a good idea!!? I suppose they do look nice though, at least they do when you can see through them and they aren't just a mass of fingerprints.......
