For centuries women have used cloth as a tool of comfort and as an expression of beauty within their homes. Creating cloth for warmth, cloth for shelter, our female predecessors embellished these linens with hand stitch using laborious and time consuming techniques thereby enhancing the functional beauty of objects which enveloped and protected their families. Inspired by these women I hope my creations pay tribute to and recognise the devotion expressed in cloth by our female ancestors .

''the use of traditional often time consuming process alludes to the devotion of a mother''. c K. A. Ruane 2007

in progress and paint....

All the things I talked about doing yesterday and an old watercolour which I found that has nothing at all to do with the ledger class. I really don't think I have another one of these in me to be honest.
These pieces (the cloth ones) require work, there is work that hasn't been damp stretched...throws up arms in horror, work that needs more work, huge, ugly and visible tacking stitches but hey, at least you know I'm not idle.
I am actually a little annoyed today and have to get something off my chest. I am not a mean person or a skinflint by any stretch of the imaginations but I HATE being ripped off.
My men folk are going away as you know, they are only taking hand luggage...it's cheaper. Because of security the max liquid allowed is 100 mls..we all know that, no problem I want them to be as safe as safe can be. This morning we went to purchase travel size 30 ml shower gel, shampoo, deodorant.
I want to know how a cost of £1.09 for 30 ml of any of these products is justifiable when the very same thing can be bought in 200ml size for £1.29??????? (that's 20 pence difference...about 40 cents US)
I HATE BEING RIPPED OFF. It's daylight robbery and I am incensed...just in case you can't tell.
I feel much better now I have gotten that off my chest......
Back to embroidery...my surface with paper, silk and vintage cloth. Can you see it amongst the rest? It needs more work which will be happening soon...in five minutes to be precise.

oh no....she's been painting again..

I have been painting again...another hour or so that's all. I figure if I get an hour in every few days then I will become more confident, the painting will improve. Embroidery has also been happening please don't think I have ''gone off'' embroidery, that would never happen. I have some pictures of white cloth to show you next time... this has not become a painting blog. The video is very short, about four minutes.....
The new classes are filling up brilliantly, thank you. So if you want to join us, especially on the ledger journey you need to go here to register.
I don't normally talk about current events on here but I really have to say that I am SO excited about the Thames Pageant...I really can't wait. I am counting the minutes, it's going to be amazing.

backgrounds.....

I did warn you that I had developed a liking for these kind of  backgrounds...but never fear, it won't become a permanent ever present feature as I have very few paintings of my own. There are two here...little strips, studies of cherries and rose hips. They might not look like the best paintings in the world to you but to me they are marvellous.....I wrung them out of myself during a very stressful assignment way back. An assignment that I neither wanted, liked or enjoyed. Having said that....I am delighted I kept them. And the points, loops and puffs? Well I am consumed this week by titivation, edges, adornments because that is what the girls are on. I have been doing some titivating of my own too and will show you another time. I had better get looking for another painted background for them....
If you didn't stop by yesterday you missed my newsletter....you can read that here if you like and you can read about more classes here and here...
now I am off to rummage through folders in search of painting....
