sampling for a sampler's cloth
Remember I said here that I was going to put flowers on this sample? Well here they are.
There is also a little applique and some small cut outs, token like pieces which have been embellished with hand stitch.
The base of this piece is a vintage hankie and it has the feel of a vintage nightgown when I am stitching into it, it's beautifully soft.
As I said last time you saw this, the extra edge has been machine basted around the outside to allow for damp stretching. That will be removed when the piece is finished.
This sample is practice for my new class 'a sampler's cloth' which will be all things hand embroidery.
I am going away tomorrow and won't be back for ten days or so.
I'm visiting Stanley and spending time in London.
There will be cake and there will be shopping.
Registration for a samplers cloth will remain open here.

as and when (again)
As and when...again.
More work in this little book.
I only picked this up because I had ran out of one inch hexagon fabric pieces and it was too late in the day for me to be faffed cutting more.
So, a little diversion from embroidery on cloth, stitching this notebook.

embroidery and one inch hexagons
There are two separate pieces of work here. The first piece, the small piece of hexagons is a continuation from my work in this post.
That one will be a very slow burner, another 'as and when' project.
The second piece, the partially worked larger piece is a cloth panel, a sample of pieced fabrics and a few embroidery techniques. This is a 'practice' piece for my new class 'a samplers cloth'.
At the moiment it has octagons, a little chain and buttonhole stitch with a few bullion knots and not much else. Later today I am hoping to add some pretty flowers, hand embroidered flowers.
The extra cloth strips at the edge are machine basted on to the main piece to allow for damp stretching. They will be removed when I have finished working on this.

lemon and lace
A little something I have been working on outside of class work, an embroidered panel on silk dupion which measure approximately 11 by 11 inches.
The lace flounce is quite big....... I like it like that.
The ribbon channels are hand stitched and the little pocket like piece laid over the lower ribbon is a tiny sleeve cuff from a baby dress.
If you love to hand embroider, to embellish, to play with beads, buttons, ribbon, fabric and thread then you may like my new class 'a sampler's cloth' which begins on May 2nd.

Sorting
I am dog sitting this week. My house is upside down with dog beds and more puppy toys than you would believe. (a toddler would cause less mess ha ha)
I thought I would add to the chaos by emptying one of my cabinets, cleaning the glass, sorting stuff out and restoring order to my Liberty fabrics.
Brace yourselves, there are a lot of pictures, mostly of disarray today!
In my last post I released details of my next online learning programme which begins on May 2nd.
You can read about that here.
I can't tell you how grateful I am for your continued support, it means a lot.

***The wrapping cloth***
For me a wrapping cloth is the physical symbol of my desire to envelop my children in cloth, to keep them safe.
***My inspiration***
For centuries women have used cloth as a tool of comfort and as an expression of beauty within their homes. Creating cloth for warmth, cloth for shelter, our female predecessors embellished these linens with hand stitch using laborious and time consuming techniques thereby enhancing the functional beauty of objects which enveloped and protected their families. Inspired by these women I hope my creations pay tribute to and recognise the devotion expressed in cloth by our female ancestors .
***A samplers cloth, a wrapping cloth created using embroidered samples.***
During the course of this 8 week programme we will explore embroidery process in sample form before joining our samples with adorned seams to create a wrapping cloth.
Each panel we create will illustrate a specific embroidery technique, be it applique, hand stitch or patchwork along with other beautiful surface embellishment processes.
(depending on your preferred techniques it is possible you will not complete your cloth during our 8 week run. This is perfectly normal but rest assured I will still be available to you should you require further guidance after this class has finished. Demonstration will also be given in the later stages of class on the finishing process)
The images here are for illustrative purposes only, they do however allow for an appreciation of the techniques we are likely to cover in this class.
Included in our timetable will be space for live demonstrations using Zoom along with the provision of one to one, face to face zoom sessions for anyone who would like guidance, support, an appraisal of works in progress or even just a chat.
The timing of Zoom sessions will be finalised in the early weeks of class once I have ascertained the needs of the group.
Participation in any Zoom session is entirely voluntary. You are not compelled to participate in those sessions and rest assured, if you choose not to participate on Zoom my commitment to your learning will be as important to me as those who do enjoy the Zoom interaction.
All video and instruction will be hosted on a private blog.
Access is also provided to a private online image sharing group which also allows for group discussion.
Refunds will not be issued unless I can fill your space.
Please allow 24 hours from registration to receipt of a welcome maiol detailing suggested supplies.

gimp, embroidery threads and hand wrapped buttons.
Thank you so much for the love for my little stitched notebook! So many views and personal messages...thank you!
Today it's more paper based work, more work on my design sheets for 'creative portfolio', a follow on from this, this and this.

as and when
This is the ultimate 'as and when' project, my stitched grids and guides notebook.
I have been working on this piece for I don't know how long, just picking it up every so often and working a page or two.
I know one or two of you have these notebooks and I actually started a Flickr group for this project some time ago.
You can find that here but I warn you, it's severely neglected and empty!

recording colour
My recent work with surface design is inspiring a few offshoots.
The little button/thread cards aren't part of class, they are just pieces I was led to create because of surface design accomplished in class.
(I am yet to annotate, to add the colour reference numbers)

hexagons and buttons
I noticed my stash of hand made buttons was depleted along with my little collection of grandmothers flower garden patchwork pieces.
The buttons are needed because well.....you can never have too many hand embroidered buttons.
The patchwork? They are really useful to have for book making, for page embellishment so as a little diversion from my surface design work I spent a few hours replenishing my stash.

developing design
Along the top of this design sheet and down the right hand side I am developing my ideas from 'creative portfolio'.
You last saw this work here. Since then we have been focusing on specific areas of our original explorations and highlighting those, presenting them as mini compositions with reference to our ribbons and thread colours.
(to my class, this is spoken of and demonstrated in detail in our new post today)
I also couldn't resist sharing my newly acquired threads and gimp today....in the last image.

buttons as a colour reference
These buttons were created as a means of recording the thread choices for my recent work in 'creative portfolio'.
Basically, each button was created in a colour which has been used for embroidery in that work.
You can see them in situ here and here.
Tonight I need to make more of these for the next design sheet....

extending surface design
I'm still working on this collection of surface design pieces, extending and exploring new ideas.
As this collection grows I am getting more and more ideas, more inspiration from each added piece.
There are more small pieces in progress to accompany these sheets with more ideas noted, ready to go just as soon as I am able to move on.

More paper embroidery, this time with extra lace, lots of pockets, bullion knots and hand wrapped ball buttons.
These images were taken with the new paper piece laid on one of my embroidered throws. As it's dark and grey here this allows the embroidered paper piece to be better captured, the details especially.

silk velvet and gimp
Silk velvet, gimp, net, hand wrapped ball buttons and embroidery, the fabric element of 'creative portfolio'.
This piece has been a long time in the making and it's not finished yet.
There are two layers here, an embroidered silk dupion base with a silk velvet and net overlay, also hand embroidered.
I created the hand wrapped ball buttons as a means of recording my thread choices and next up, a little stitch reference to accompany those.

surface design
I'm a little later than normal today. My schedule is a little upside down at the moment because of family stuff but I made it here in the end.
This work is progress from 'creative portfolio'.
There is appliqued kid leather, stitching on paper, gimp, ribbon and hand made ball buttons. ( I am in love with those and can't stop making them!)
These compositions, these design ideas are very satisfying to create and extend.
There will be more of this.

finishing edges
The first thing I need to do today is apologise for the images. I must have taken one hundred photographs, battling against the gloom and grey skies.
White is hard enough to photograph.....give me a break weather.
I've been finishing the edges of this piece, mostly with hand embroidery but also with a few little pompoms and a pleated piece of vintage lace.

developing design ideas
Progress. My design sampling for class is developing, being extended.
There is something very satisfying about Surface design and no rules. Fabric? yes if you like. Torn paper? of course. Do I have to draw? Not if you don't want to Karen.
How about paper and fabric mixed? definitely.
Gimp on paper.......oh yes.
I am loving this process, can you tell?

paper
In between working on my pieces for class I am still stitching papers, tearing strips, tearing randon shapes, overlaying them and adding lace or ribbon before embellishing with hand stitch.
I am getting quite a collection.
Each piece informs the next, taking one aspect of one and altering it slightly for the next one whilst also adding something new.
The last image today is a little mosaic of the collection to date....

Design and another announcement!
Not a new image but an image which best shows where my embroidery head is at the moment.
I am trying very hard to channel my innner Christian Lacroix......trying.....trying....
Creative Portfolio has been running for a week, hence the Christian Lacroix reference.
I doubt he would approve of my efforts but I'm sure he'd be pleased I was giving it a go.
Anyway, it's not too late to join us so if you are even slightly tempted you can read more here.
In other news.....our second little soul has arrived and I swear my heart can't take much more.

bullion knots
What a day.....it took me so long to get a half decent image of this work because of the horrendous weather we have.
It's a relief that I got there in the end.
The newest piece here is the vintage cloth edge secured with bullion knots and titivated with dangly beads.
This paper piece will have more bullion knots than buttonhole stitch. I'm feeding my need for both.
I am going to be quiet now for a few days. I am once again on baby watch with my second grandchild in three weeks due any day.
I know I am spoilt in the grandchildren department and I feel very blessed.
To remind you, Stanley arrived just under 3 weeks ago.
(yes, I know, he is huge....I swear he will be walking in a few weeks!)
( a note for my creative portfolio group. I have had to change the time of one of our Zoom sessions tomorrow. The new invitations have been sent but if you didn't receive one please let me know)

I'm still working on these paper pieces, adding embellishments and in fact have joined two pieces from this post.
The next step I think is to put another collage of paper together and begin embroidery on that surface informed and inspired by the embellishments added here.
If you are registered for 'Creative Portfolio' you should have received passwords and Flickr invitations this morning.

the love affair with paper continues
The passion for paper remains....there are three pieces here. I was going to say two of them need more work but in truth I'm not sure the larger piece is finished. I said here that I could keep going with that one forever.
The piece from my last post has been added to and I'm in the process of adding tiny pink pom poms to an edge of that one.

This is the start of my next embroidered paper sample. It's a continuation of this work.
There is an area at one edge that is yet to be embellished and then I'll decide if I am going to add to this, allow it to grow.
If you are registered for 'Creative Portfolio' you should have received mail from me this morning.
If you didn't receive any then please let me know asap.

always sampling
The pieces from here and here have been added to, extended, further embellished.
Gimp has been added to the woven piece and another layer has been attached to an edge of the bigger piece.
(I swear I could keep going forever with the large paper piece, it's such a joy to embellish)
I've half stopped with the woven piece as that was a sampling exercise for 'creative portfolio'.
I'm trying to hold myself back with prep for class as I don't want to get carried away before I have chance to chat with the girls.
I was thinking this morning about sampling, maybe not focused sampling but relaxing embroidery, just going with the flow. It's such a valuable thing to do. Whilst I am mindlessly embellishing these pieces I get ideas for other pieces, it feeds my creativity. I know you probably do it already but if you don't I recommend it!
Thanks to those of you who subscribed using my new feed thingy. To recap, my old feed provider is no more. I have found a new one and the link for you to subscribe to this blog is on the right hand side of the page, 'Feedblitz'. If you would like to get these ramblings delivered to your inbox just use that link...it's free! Not much is free these days.
A question. I have the email details for all the subscribers from my old feed provider. Would it be rude of me to invite them to the new feed? I'm not sure what to do?
And finally.....'Creative Portfolio' begins in just over a week. If you would like to join us you can read more here.

weaving paper and ribbon
This piece is from the same sampling thought process as this. I am playing with ideas for woven surfaces which I'm hoping will become overlays of sorts for my work in 'creative portfolio'.
I'm hoping by sampling I can achieve the exact structures I'm aiming for. (these literally are just samples and I'm hoping the end results will be a lot different to these but I can't say too much about that)

London shopping and other news
Hi all, I'm back. Did you miss me?
These are a few of the things I bought whilst I was in London over the past eight days.
I didn't really have much time for shopping and you will hear about that further down in this post, saving the best until last.
Apart from the 'other thing', my new class, 'creative portfolio' is high on my list of things to get excited about. These colours, the ones above will hopefully have a prominent place in my sampling for my personal collection created during those eight weeks.
Class begins in just under two weeks.... you can read more about it and register here.
While I am here, could I ask that you please consider subscribing to this blog using the Feedblitz link on the right hand side of this page (just above the video).
My old subscription feed has closed down and it would really help me and this little blog if you subscribed...thank you!! (it won't cost you anything x)

Now for the big announcement.
Stanley Edward Gordon arrived on Monday January 17 at 6.55 am weighing a whopping 9lb 14oz. (originally they gave his weight as 9lb 9oz but it was revised upwards).

extending with more embroidered paper and a new subscription service
More embroidered paper has been added to the piece from yesterday. In truth I could do this forever!
This will be laid to one side for a little while now as I have initial samples for 'creative portfolio' to progress and I am going to London on Friday for who knows how long.
Could you all hold hands and chant for this baby to arrive. Thanks in advance ha ha.
Now to the subscription element of this post.
Subscribing by email makes a huge difference to any blog. I have been using 'feedburner' to provide that option to you for many years but sadly they have wound up, no longer exist.
After a lot of searching and way too much technical stuff for my addled brain I have managed to sign up for 'feedblitz'.
On the right hand side of this page is the link where you can sign up to receive my blogposts in your email. Screen shot below so you know what you are looking for.
You will need to click the link on the right hand side of this page to subscribe.
Please consider doing this. It helps me a lot and it also means you won't ever miss any of my ramblings.

paper play
Do you remember the mirrors from the last post? Do you remember how I said I was considering removing the mirrors and working with what was left?
Well I did it. The remains are attached here to an ongoing piece of embroidered paper. I add to this piece as and when I get the urge so it was the perfect opportunity to play with the trim, minus the mirrors.

asking questions
More stash images today. This helps me, it allows me to take stock and assess. I'm struggling to really concentrate hard at the moment because I am waiting for the phone call..... doing this allows for some clarity.
(for those of you who don't know, my daughter and future daughter in law are due to have babies any day. In the case of my daughter that will mean a quick dash to London....I'm on pins)
First of all though, embroidery.
Why the huge investment in my stash? Why the sampling of stitches and composition?
It's because I will be working outside of my comfort zone in terms of colour and clashing during 'creative portfolio' so not only am I easing myself in gently I am assessing what I can and can't live with.
The first decision in that regard has already been made. I won't be using the mirror trim. It's too much for me. I am however considering removing the mirrors and working with what's left.
The other dilemma I have at this moment, right now is to not get too far ahead before class begins so I am going to knit for a couple of days.
More stash building below.
(if you are registered for 'creative portfolio' you should have received a short video from me this morning. If you haven't received that can you please let me know)

gathering.......continued.
Gathering continues here, collecting and recording pieces to use in 'creative portfolio', to inspire, to use alongside new work, for these pieces to become an integral part of my design work.
There are more little collections here and here, the same theme, cohesive collections, at least I hope so, just as I hope I can do all these gorgeous pieces justice when I begin my work.
(Only the ribbon is new here, the fabric swatches and paper piece have been in my 'stash' for a long time as have most of the pieces in the other collections mentioned above.)

patterned paper, mounts for gingham samples continued
I am continuing to work on the pieces started here in this post. The piece today is the second of eight.....or maybe nine.
I still haven't made a decision on where to go next with these but I am leaning towards a simple 'tie them together' situation.
Having said that, there are a lot of raw edges here and you know I can't resist a raw edge.
I'm also picking up my knitting needles in between....I am on baby hats now.
It's hard to believe that in three weeks or sooner I will be a nanna to two, yes two little people.
(just to say.....I may suddenly disappear. I am going to London just as soon as something happens in the giving birth department!)

stitched paper mounts
Do you remember these embroidered gingham samples from here? I mounted them onto more gingham with a view to binding them and creating a cloth sample book.
As I'm not working on anything specific at the moment I had another look at them yesterday and decided I wanted to mount the mounted pieces onto stitched paper mounts.....this could go on forever, gingham mounted on gingham, mounted on paper, mounted again......jeez Karen, stop!
Working with these should at least keep me out of trouble until the new class begins. You can read about class here.
I have recently mentioned secret knitting projects. At the foot of this post are the two pieces which have been keeping me busy but which are no longer a secret, there are two, identical, baby sleeping bags. (poor images I'm afraid, white and cloudy days, what can you do)

in search of bling
There isn't much embroidery happening here at the moment which is a good thing. It's a good thing because I am itching to play with the trimmings and adornments I am gathering for my next class 'creative portfolio'. If I set off too early I am likely to be finished before class even starts.
For now I am getting a lot of pleasure from the gathering, from looking in boxes which haven't been opened for an age, from searching through fabrics for the little pieces which will fit with my theme and from gathering these together and appreciating the potential.
The other reason for a lack of embroidery is knitting. I am almost finished with the second of two pieces I am creating for the little souls I am dying to meet next month. Once the parents have seen those I will share with you I promise.

gathering, sampling, questioning,
I hope you all had a wonderful festive season. It was quite quiet here, we are mostly hunkered down waiting for babies and I have got sparks coming off my knitting needles! such is my urge to get these things finished.
Both babies are due in January so I am keeping that month commitment free, that doesn't mean I can't play though or order inspirational things to inform my work for the new class 'creative portfolio' which begins in February.
I have copied more information about that class at the foot of this post but meantime take a look at the first things to arrive from my latest shopping spree and how I have used those for sampling, sampling which isn't really focused at the moment, it's a getting to know you and a getting my brain ticking exercise!
Begins Friday February 4th 2022 for 8 weeks.
Suitable for the beginner and the more experienced embroiderer.
You do not need to have participated in any of my previous online learning programmes to take part in this online learning programme.
Content suitable for those with a love of cloth, a preference for paper based work or both.
During the course of this 8 week learning experience we will examine the basics of design for embroidery, recording our sampling, our colour choices, our thread and fabric selections in a creative portfolio which will be an invaluable tool for future work and a unique resource for your creative library.
Think play, think small stitched samples, think colour studies, think fabric swatches, think presentation, think adorning pages, think 'artist book' if that is your preference over portfolio.
Instruction and demonstration will be provided regarding the creation of both a paper based presentation portfolio and a cloth based presentation portfolio.
Should you not wish to participate in that aspect of the course, demonstrations which take place on Zoom will be available to you for private viewing.
All video and instruction will be hosted on a private blog.
Access is also provided to a private online image sharing group which also allows for group discussion.

new ribbon, new sampling.
The embroidered ribbon is new, it arrived earlier this week and I couldn't resist a little sampling, a test of its potential.
I only ordered a small amount to see the quality for myself, it has blown me away and I will be ordering more.
There will be a lot more work added to this piece. I'm thinking raised, padded areas, lots of hand stitch and a few beads perhaps.
Today is my last post for a week or so.
I have Christmas stuff to do and also knitting, the knitting is backing up.
I will leave registration open for my first class of 2022 which begins in February.
You can read more about that here.
Have a fabulous holiday season and take care.
I will see you on the other side x

potential
The potential of a new artist book....fresh pages, blank canvas.
This is an old image but was just what I needed to see today to fire me up.
This book isn't yet finished. The pages were removed after this image was taken.
If you have just taken my last class you will know why....shhhhh.
Meanwhile, I told you I was knitting.

extending
The small embroidered piece from this post has been extended. More has been added including a little lace pocket. (I have put a button in that in the last image just in case you can't see it)
This piece could grow and grow. I have a lot of small embroidered paper pieces which would live easily alongside these.
Meantime, I want to make more of these, you can never have too many of those and of course, there's knitting to do.
Also, my first class of 2022 is now open for registration.
Creative portfolio....
Begins Monday february 4th 2022 for 8 weeks.
Instruction and demonstration will be provided regarding the creation of both a paper based presentation portfolio and a cloth based presentation portfolio.

a tiny composition
Sewing circle finished earlier this week. On Monday we held two group Zoom sessions during which we had a good old natter and I demonstrated the 'putting together' of a little snippet for an artist book page.
Since then I have been embellsihing my piece and here it is.
I hope the group approve of what what I have done here.

edges
I've been playing a little with edges over the past couple of days.
More has been added to this piece and there are some large sequins at the back of the other embellishments on here, the fringe and the soft beads, which aren't easily visible so I moved one to the front in the last image so you can see.
For now the ribbon piece just has a few butonhole edges where the ribbon may fray. I intend to work some more on that piece.

it's a start
I reacquainted myself with my embroidery needle yesterday, put the knitting down for 24 hours.
This piece is a mix of paper and lace, It's partially worked, there is a lot more to add to this surface.
So far so good. I get a lot of pleasure from working these pieces.
I'm loving my knitting, creating things for the two little people I will get to meet in the New Year but I also love my embroidery. Both are calling me....
Today I will knit again, tomorrow it will be embroidery.

this morning
I'm back.....phew. I have been back from London for a few days but have been extra busy hence my absence from here.
I've also been knitting as opposed to stitching, trying to crack on with baby things before the babies actually arrive. I may start campaigning for pregnancy to last 12 months so I can get my knitting finished!!
This morning however the embroidery was back. I made my last videos for 2021, quite an occasion I guess.
This is my work space, my creative clutter.
(it's tidy now, pristine!)

edges and adornments
We have been playing with titivations in class again this week. We embroidered funky puffs, (fabric beads), we embroidered trims and edges too.
These images show both the 'old' and the new. The 'old' for reference, the 'old' as a very useful resource.
I am off to London for a few days later this week.
I will mostly be unsupervised.
There will be shopping.
I can't wait.
