Anyway, back to the main business, the important stuff, embroidery. Remember I had hit a brain block with the piece I was making for my bedroom? When that happens I have a tendency to get all my stuff out from before. I mean ALL my stuff, sketchbooks, samples, finished work, everything. Never mind the mess or the fact that there is nowhere to put your feet in the house, it generally works. I apologise if you have seen this before but it really helps take me back to why I do this, what drives me. This is a small section of some artwork I did using domestic cloths, kitchen towels as inspiration. There were more pictures of this but I am not sure if you have seen it and I didn't want to repeat myself. Anyhow, this tiny piece of artwork led originally to the stitched samples below it. I'm not sure if you have seen this before either....sorry if you have but it is so relevant. The artwork above led to these samples, again from an old sketchbook. When I say sketchbook referring to my own, I use the term very loosely. I am not a natural, conventional sketcher. Not a lot of pencils and painting going on around here. I really, really wish I felt able to draw more. I see some artwork, illustrative work in particular and have such a yearning, but it's not to be. God I'm rabbiting now, back to the sewing. I made some tiny hexagon blocks out of cotton and lace as a surface to embellish with stitch. I remembered how lovely it was to embroider on this piece and it has led to the creation of a new surface to stitch on for the next part of my bedroom piece.
So far I have applied french knots to a long strip of silk. This is really quite time consuming and I'm not even half way down yet but ideas are coming all the time and this piece may well change as it grows. There is a funny conversation going on at the moment over here on flickr questioning my sanity!! Feel free to join in, I can take it!
The plan then, do more of this, change it a little bit, see what happens, tell you what happened! Now I am off to do some blog hopping, hope you've all been busy!
p.s. don't forget my give away below. I think I will draw it at the weekend.

This is developing so nicely. Can't wait for the next installment.
Am starting to getting nervous and excited about my new life. Had a whole day playing today. (Pictues shortly) and kept thinking. Wow. Soon I'll be doing this "properly". At the moment I'm still struggling with the reality of it.
Beautiful stiching, as usual!
Did you buy magazines in San Fran? What kind? What kind do you like, I'm happy to send them on - just let me know! xo, Nan
The different textures with the hexagons is going to make the embellishing really interesting. Counting those french knots might help you get some sleep!
I love seeing how your ideas develop Karen. The lace hexagons are gorgeous. As for jet lag... apparently it takes one day for each hour of time difference before you feel "normal" again!
Yep, seriousy bonkers. Your level of patience is super-human- had you thought of embellishing acape and beoming french knot woman? Seriously, good to see the next stage
Great work as always, Karen and good luck with your jet lag!
You ashstonished me again. It is simply so superduper gorgeous. You are one very, I mean VERY, talented lady.
Hope you feeling a little bit better already.
Welcome home : ) Beautiful stitching.
I love the original piece that led to the hexagons - and these French knots are amazing. Amazing patience, too - I think I would have given up the will to live long before now! But the end result is stunning and it will be worth it. Beside, something to do those early mornings while your body thinks it's still in SF!
BTW. Don't forget to tell us which magazine to look out for. And why don't you prepare us for the reveal by putting just a tiny photo of your face in the sidebar....? Go on, you know you want to!
I got your lovely piece in the mail Karen. Fab handwork...I posted a picture on my blog. =-)
I once did a whole cuff in french knots and was going crazy by the end. But you, Karen, are completely mad!
I love how honest your blog is - you're not painting roses for us all.

The most important thing is not to sleep when you arrive unless you arrive at night local time. Check this article on dealing with jet lag.
