For centuries women have used cloth as a tool of comfort and as an expression of beauty within their homes. Creating cloth for warmth, cloth for shelter, our female predecessors embellished these linens with hand stitch using laborious and time consuming techniques thereby enhancing the functional beauty of objects which enveloped and protected their families. Inspired by these women I hope my creations pay tribute to and recognise the devotion expressed in cloth by our female ancestors .

Pattern and stitch

Thi spiece popped up in my Facebook memories today and I'm so pleased it did.

It has provided more inspiration for my current design work especially the gimp and the buttons but also the composition, the placement of paper alongside embroidery.

Seeing the gimp reminded me of my mother. When she was a patient at the tubereculosis hospital she made belts and bags using gimp. In those days I don't think it came in colours because all I ever saw was a beautiful off-white. I still have a piece of one of the belts somewhere in my stash.
