sampling on cloth
The larger piece of embroidery here (top of first image, bottom of second image) is placed on the right of the sheet you saw here.
There is a small area of cloth scraps and French knots on that piece which really appeals to me so I am sampling that idea on small pieces of handkerchief.
The little samples measure approximately four by four inches.
I still have work to do on the main sheet but am not too far off a full reveal.

progress
Progress.....this has moved on a little since you last saw it.
I filled the white space around the stitched paper with seed stitch and added French knots to the outer edge of the long piece to mimic pompoms.
A little embroidered cloth has also been added and going forward I want to collage some scraps of lace into a couple of the spaces.
My next task though....a little paint.

Friday
I'm dithering a little today.
The large sheet I spoke of yesterday needs lots of attention and I am considering changing my plan on how to take that forward.
The area on the left hand side with white space......that's paper I have secured with stitch in that area.
Next step for that is a little seed stitch.
Meanwhile, a little scrap of gingham is crying out for more web stitches.

still sampling
The large sample sheet I showed you last time and which you can also see in the first image here has inspired these little two inch square samples.
I'm hoping that all the sampling happening recently will inform design ideas as I progress this new work.
There is a new, larger sheet in progress too but not yet advanced enough to share.
Working on that large sheet is my plan for later today.

with added embroidered cloth
I have worked some more on the design idea from here. This now has embroidered cloth as part of the composition.
I like the direction this is taking and I have plans for an extension of this sheet.
Firstly though, there are areas on here which have snippets of cloth, pin pricking and French knots (you can see some of that clearly, top right in the second image).
This process and effect really appeals to me so I am going to sample that some more before I do anything else.

Sunday
Table....
It's been an upside down kind of week where not much has happened creatively since this.
I've had overnight visitors and I've been on nanna duty for two full days.
Do you have any idea how exhausting it is caring for a mobile one year old lol.
If you do can we swap notes?
So today I am appraising where I am and where I need to go.
The gridded notepad with the faint doodle and the stitched piece on top are the main focus.
The doodle is my plan on how to integrate the embroidery into the design sheet.
It works on paper, let's see if it works in practice.

next steps
I'm taking baby steps moving this work forward.
This is the first sample where I'm placing my past sampling into the actual shape of 'something'.
Unseen is also a little scrap of embroidery to accompany this which I am still working on.
I'm not forcing any of this, just going with the flow and enjoying the process.

a little gingham embellishment
Working on the paper based pieces I showed you yesterday requires quite a bit of prep.
If I don't get enough done with that preparation this is what I pick up.
Embellishing gingham is a peacefull pastime. I thoroughly recommend it.

design sheet
The sheet from here is finished now and the little cards have also found a home.
It's now time to move this on, to place my pattern and colour ideas into an actual product shape.
I have an idea for that, it involves a pencil and a blank sheet of paper so I have been practicing my avoidance techniques!
I need to put my big girl pants on, get over myself and crack on.

thread matching
I'm back from my break in Stockholm, an amazing few days in what must be one of the most beautiful cities in the world.
I wouldn't say I was refreshed ha ha...city tourism is exhausting but I am definitely raring to go with this work.
This image was taken before I left. As I mentioned in this post, a little thread matching was needed.
It could be better in terms of exact matching but I'm not being too hard on myself with this project, I have the freedom for a little 'artistic licence'.
As you can see in this early image of this sheet, there is another area to fill. I'm going to start that today.

recording details
Despite my misgivings yesterday I made quite a bit of progress with this work.
Recording details as I go helps with reference to colour, threads, fabrics etc as I begin each new 'piece' of work for this collection.
(The thread wraps here, on the small cards with fabric swatches, they reference thread used to stitch the swatches to the card not the paint colour.)
When I start something like this, this collection, I gather as much information as I can along the way, it helps when deciding on final designs.
I'm definitely not finished with this stage, I think it's essential I match some thread with paint swatches and I have more collage and stitched paper ideas brewing.
(to see more work relating to this post follow this link. This post will be top of the page, just scroll past it.)

a patchwork strip
My presence here has been hit and miss this week, I do apologise. Things here are upside down and wrong way round at the moment and we won't talk about the five hours it took me to make a one and a half hour journey yesterday.
But.....there's nothing wrong or bad happening here so I shouldn't moan and I definitely shouldn't moan because this time on Monday I will be here.
Meanwhile events are conspiring against progress with my recent work.
As you can see today though I have managed to add to the sheet from here.
How much progress can I make before I go away? I have no idea.....not much is my best guess but I'm going to try......

patchwork and circles
Square patchwork in a circle....very much in progress. There is paper collage in this too and I have no idea yet what will be used in the empty areas.
This sheet and the others I have created are all inspired by my initial explorations on A3 paper that you have seen many times but as a reminder you can go here, here, and here.
This is all part of my plan to gather as much information on pattern and composition as I can before moving on to placing my ideas into an actual 'product'.
A product can be anything, it can be useable, a bag, a throw, a garment. It can be decorative, wall art, coffee table book etc etc.
As yet I haven't decided on my 'product'.
I may not have one. I may just have ideas centred on a few things that will never get past the design stage.
It's too early for me to say although technically that decision should have been made before I started any of this.

half paper, half fabric
There are two sheets in progress here, one with two inch squares, one with four inch squares.
The two inch squares will have one half fabric, one half paper.
The four inch squares will have one half paper and one half patched fabric. That will enable more pattern mixing, more pattern choices for when I move this forward again.
If you are wondering why this patchwork.....it is inpsired by the dress here top left.

I have added to the piece from here. ........three inch squares which mimic the patchwork on the dress, part of the original design sheet.
This morning I put together some larger squares in order to enlarge the ones you can see here, to look at the patterning in more detail.

watercolour, embroidery and thread matching
The sheet from here has been developed a little from when you last saw it.
I've added a little area of watercolour along with simple embroidered circles which reflect the stitched paper on the lower right hand side.
I think the next thing to do will be to patchwork some patterned papers.

a different colour palette
A new design sheet in its very early stages.
I'm not saying the progression of these is over. I'm actually still working on a piece for that collection but I needed some white in my life, some subtlety.
This morning I added a little paint to this....I will show you soon.

developing ideas
After mentioning yesterday how I'd struggled to find time for creativity last week I have hit the ground running today.
A window viewer, six by six inches, a fresh piece of paper and concrete purpose.
Also here, a little bit of fun playing, just a little gathering of 'things' which loosely relate to what i'm doing here.

little piles of stuff
It's been a bit hectic here this week so nothing much has happened creatively although I did manage to order some white velvet ribbon.
The magazine you can see in one of these images, 'Little Thing' is where I tore my papers from for the collages I have been doing recently.
That magazine is from China and I struggled to find any new ones so I've been sourcing that too.
I took a chance and contacted a Japanese magazine seller on Etsy who amazingly found some copies for me which are winging their way here as we speak. What a guy!
Now for a little update on my boys
Stanley
Sonny. The only little boy at a Princess party bless him.

ribbon
If you look closely at the last image, there's a red rectangle marking the place I have put a pin.
The head of that pin is resting on the tiniest image of embellished ribbon, ribbon adorned with found objects.
That's what I am playing with here, the idea of adorning ribbons taken from this design sheet.
It's just one of many samples I hope to create going forward.

extending sampling
I'm still happily playing with my glue stick. (It's only being used on paper.)
The collage on these pieces informs the embroidery and everything else which happens including the woven paper scraps and the fabric covered rings.
As yet nothing is secured on this A3 sheet. I am working on other pieces and will decide on the composition when those are finished.

thinking of overlays
You will be seeing a lot of these A3 design sheets as I progress this work.
They are the focal point of everything which follows, all my basic information is on those, pattern, colour, texture.
Not shown here are two pieces I am working on as an extension of this work, they aren't quite 'show me' ready yet but along with those pieces I am considering my overlay options hence the lace cloth here.

slow progress
I haven't spent as much time on this work as I had hoped over the past week due to nanna duties and nanna duties are always the best use of time so no worries there.
Small details have been added to both these sheets. There is a new small piece taking shape (top right, last image) and I have been sticking torn strips together for a little weaving I have planned.
It's still baby steps and time deficient due to babies so it's very cohesive ha ha.

exploring
This piece has been in progress for almost a week.
It's baby steps, the first dip of my toe into a plan to try something new.
OK, there's pin pricking and my usual embroidery stitches, they will most likely be ever present but what I'm hoping to achieve is progress with a different type of composition, a cohesive body of work created to generate new ideas.
Like I said, baby steps for now.
(some images aren't loading for me...are they loading for you?)

extending
You will notice in this post how all the lace cloth I made is almost covered now with patchwork and hand embroidery.
Yesterday I spent a little time working on the areas where there was no stitching, extending the area covered with lace cloth to enable me to add more patchwork and hand embroidery.
Next I need to add more silk velvet patches, the areas where the patchwork lives.

more patchwork and embroidery on lace cloth
This piece has had more work since you last saw it here.
There is another grandmother's flower garden patchwork on the surface along with a couple more small stitched pieces.
I intend to keep going with this, altering this surface by adding more 'lace like' stitching with my sewing machine along with more silk velvet patches which will then be embellished with gingham patchwork.
When this piece is completely embellished I will begin a new piece and add it to this one, making the most of the seam.......decorating that with hand embroidery.

embroidery, hexagons and silk velvet
If you were wondering what I was going to do with these then here is your answer.
I see the smaller pieces as medallion like and attaching those to the surface as separate pieces gives them a different dimension to what would be achieved stitching them to the actual base cloth. I'm very happy with this so far.
This work from last time....I have been doodling but I'm not brave enough to show you yet....

design sheet and embroidery on white
Two pieces today.
The latest, finished piece for my lace cloth collection which I have been working on for quite some time....and a design sheet, very much in progress and which is taking shape with my subscription tiers on Ko-Fi.
You can sign up to one of my subscription learning tiers at any time and get access to all video posted since the start. You will also get free access to a past class, a ledgers class once you have completed three months subscription.
Back to the design sheet...there is a long way to go with this, a lot of white space to fill and I have plans.....

I am so taken with the little pockets I showed you here that I decided I want one so this one is for me.
It will be bigger than the these, lined with Liberty and I won't struggle to find something to put in it!
I am enjoying stitching on gingham so much, there is something very addictive about filling a little square with French knots or bullion knots or web stitch before moving on to the next one.

more gingham and hand embroidery
It's back to gingham today after 'white' last time.
Another flower garden has been added to the main piece since the last time you saw it and the tiny samples of web stitch are now stitched to the gingham mounts as opposed to just being pinned.
I am going to continue working on the flower graden piece, adding more whilst not really having a firm idea of where I'm going.
For now that doesn't matter, I'm just enjoying the process and that's enough.
I will be away for a few days from today.
I'm off to London to see a certain little boy and visit Liberty.
