stitching a doodle
This is the second time I have stitched a little into a page with you. (recently at least) I refer to the first time in the short video today and you can see that here if you haven't a clue what I am talking about. In the video here I say I most likely won't work on this any more for the time being but as soon as I turned the camera off I added running stitch, more French knots and a couple of little beads.
It's surprising how little embroidery is needed to lift a page, to alter it completely, to add depth and texture.

two pieces
Please indulge me today, I really couldn't decide which images to leave out. Some are similar but I have tried to show you as much of the surface of the larger piece as I can. You last saw that in a hoop. It's finished now. Well I say finished, it still needs to be lined and have the edges titivated but it's damp stretched and ready. That piece is a cover for the third little sketchbook I am making.
The other piece, the single motif is very small. It's approximately three inches long. That piece is another page for the little cloth book of embroidery I am making. You last saw that here. (quite a while ago actually) The little cloth book is obviously a slow burner although I think I'm nearly there.
This morning I made videos for ledger class and tomorrow I'm going to make videos for embroidery class. I'm guessing you won't see these very colourful things for a few days because I am going to be surrounded by colour studies and charm squares!

sequins and a green ribbon wrap
A little hand made sketchbook with an embroidered cover. This one has sequins at the lower edge and a green silk ribbon which wraps around the pages from the top to close it. I'm making a few of these and then I'm going to list them in the shop. I have two finished books at this point and a third which is almost complete. They are a joy to create. I'm loving working with the brightly patterned ribbon and fabric, the vibrant threads for the embroidery and the pretty sequins which change colour depending on the light.

a ledger, a record of stitch, a sampling sketchbook,
Progress in my ledger for my online learning class, 'ledgers a record of stitch'. In truth, if you could see what is being produced in class this looks rather measly. I do however have a lot more plans for this....and them..... and to be fair we do have the best part of a year left in which to do it. A couple of the pages you can see here have a lot more work left to do on them, more to be added in terms of stitch and colour. The beaded edge in the last image needs to be finished too.
I love working in these ledgers almost as much as I love working on cloth, putting ideas down on paper but not drawn or painted, using stitch because after all what I do is always concerned with stitch so if stitch forms the main part of the design procces I learn as I am working on the paper. It informs what will happen on cloth.
I am going to London again tomorrow for a few days. Miss you already!

two embroidery hoops
Some work in progress, two pieces of embroidery in hoops. One of these is tiny, the embroidered area measures 4 x 4 inches. That one is another page for my embroidered cloth book. The larger piece is an embroidered cover for a sketchbook and measures 9 x 4 inches. Neither of these is very big I know but I am not skimping on the stitch. I'm aiming to create textured, rich and fascinating embellished surfaces. As you can see, I am having lots of fun with ribbon and trims too.

needlecase
We are putting a little needlecase together in embroidery school....or at least I am. (I'm hoping they are too!) Using white for this is a bit of a change from all the colour you have seen recently. I do like to touch base with white every so often and the fabrics in this are all from my vintage stash.
There's still some way to go with this and as that's happening in class I'm not sure how long it will be until you see this again. Tomorrow will almost certainly be colour, pattern, little books, ribbon and beads!

handmade books, sketchbooks, embroidery books,
There was more 'appraisal' happening here this morning, namely how much work is still needed on my embroidered cloth book and my little collection of handmade sketchbooks. This appraisal wasn't as scary as the one I did yesterday, I've made much more progres with these.
The longer piece on the left hand side is the cover for my embroidered cloth book. The cover is finished, lined, edged but I can't finish the actual book yet as it needs more pages and I'm waiting for silk. The lower piece is a cover for a little four inch square sketchbook. That piece still needs to be lined and the green ribbon which appears in the next images will be used as a wrap on that one, a closure.
The finished artist book top right is one I made around two years ago. It has inspired and informed what comes next. I feel so lucky to have such a wealth of resources which I have created myself. It definitely pays to create and keep, that way inspiration is always to hand.

stash squares, charm squares and trims
Remember yesterday I said I wanted to put another little sketchbook together, finish my little cloth book and also finish my current little sketchbook and I couldn't decide what to do first? Ha....something else appeared in the mix today....my collection of charm squares, stash squares and trims for embroidery school. Oh well, at least I won't get bored this side of 2030.
I was 'appraising' my progress on this little gathering of works in progress this morning and generating ideas for moving all this forward into a comprehensive collection. The ideas are certainly there. It's a case now of prioritising and time organisation, neither of which I am renowned for.

four inches square
This little hand made sketchbook is four inches square. Of course for me it's more about the cover, the chance to embellish and adorn and piece cloth but having said that I do find myself turning the little pages quite a lot....flicking through them even though they are blank.
It's funny but since I started to make these little sketchbooks last week I have had a few enquiries about my marathon artist book class from last year, namely am I running it again and why isn't it listed as a work on your own class. First of all I doubt I will be running it again for at least a year if ever. Secondly, why isn't it listed as a work on your own class? short answer...I haven't a clue. (we don't make these little books in that class and I have explained that to those enquiring but it doesn't appear to have put anyone off which makes me very happy)
So this morning I sorted all that out and 12 months of artist books IS now listed as a work on your own class here.
and if you don't want to 'work on your own' there are two live classes running at the moment...embroidery here and Ledger titivation here.
Going back to my little book, the cover still needs quite a bit of work and I'm itching to start another sketchbook.....but....my little cloth book is almost finished and I want to finish that too. It's a bit like the chicken and the egg, which will come first.

edges
This is the wrap I am making for my large artist book, the one with embroidered samples mounted onto paper pages. I'm almost there, just the edges to finish which is happening quite slowly due to me getting distracted every five minutes........you know how it is, you most likely get distracted every five minutes too. I'm in no rush though, part of me doesn't want to ever finish this as it's so lovely to work on, to pick up and put down.

still not finished
It probably looks finished to you but it isn't. It has moved on from here though. I have more plans for it.....I'm going to put buttons and threads and things inside. The cover is lined and attached to the pages and there's a very long piece of ribbon coming from the reverse edge which wraps around the book to keep it closed. Three edges have been finished with buttonhole stitch, the other with dangly blue sequins.
I could become addicted to these. However.....my 'to do' pile is huge. I have stash squares to stitch and charm squares to stitch and a cloth book to finish along with a cover for a much bigger artist book. I have another one of these little sketchbooks cut out and a cover for it pieced and tacked ready to be embroidered. At least I won't be twiddling my thumbs any time soon.

embroidered pages
More embroidered silk pages for my little cloth book. I'm amost there I think but I'll know better when I start playing with putting it all together later. I'm thinking I might need another three pieces? We shall see. The pages are 4 x 6 inches when backed and hemmed. The cover measures 14 x 7 inches but may well be longer than that if I add dangly things to the ends. I love this one....then again I also love this one from the other day and another little square one I have put together since then which you haven't seen yet. Oh my...so much love going on here.....

a little hand made sketchbook with an embroidered cover....not finished yet
A little hand made sketchbook created with acrylic paper and a couple of pretty spotty and striped pages. I made this yesterday, I was only playing but I love it. The embroidered cover was compulsory, you know I can't help myself. It's not finished yet, more embroidery is needed on the cover which then has to be lined before being stitched to the spine of the book. I'm also thinking of little 'bits' I might be able to put in here. Little thread cards perhaps? Some tiny buttons on a card? I don't know yet...I'm thinking.

binding an edge with ribbon
I got home from London late afternoon yesterday and was desperate to use some of the beautiful ribbon I had bought whilst I was away. All the loose ribbon you see here was bought in London. It's perfect for the edge of this little 'book wrap' my only regret is I didn't buy more. (the green didn't make it past this audition but not to worry, I have plans for that and the rest of my new stash which you can't see here.) I will show you my other things as and when they pop up in my work.
Part of the reason for my London trip was to visit the Dior and Mary Quant exhibitions at the V&A both of which were inspirational, incredible, mind blowing. I can't recommned you visit strongly enough. Dior is sold out I think but there is a way round that, become a member of the V&A. Membership allows you unlimited access to all exhibitions without extra cost and no booking of time slots, just turn up!
If you want to see images from the exhibitions there are lots on my Instagram here.

a table full of stitch
The most important pieces here, for today at least are the two panels with pink gingham at the bottom. They are laid alongside my embroidered cloth sample books. I'm thinking, considering, hoping to get a spark of an idea of how the two gingham pieces can be mounted, placed in a book of sorts. They both need edges, fancy edges or simple bound edges...I haven't decided yet. Also, do I make more samples with pink gingham and have a pink sample book? or do I create a book with contrasting samples?
Well....I haven't decided yet, sorry.

a page and patching my wrap
The backing was added to my wrap yesterday and it needed 'patching' in a couple of places. On this area I have laid a small strip of blue floral ribbon. Patching doesn't mean it's wrong, badly made, not considered. Patching is what I like to do when finishing any piece like this, a piece which evolves without precision planning, a piece which just evolves. I thought a lot about my early wrapping cloths whilst putting this one together and if you have ever taken that class you will know exactly what I mean. The next stage for this is the edges, hand embroidery, a little beading, maybe some tassels or similar. That's also something I also like to just 'happen'.
The page here is my latest offering for Ledger class. That is in it's early stages, there is a long, long way to go.
I was delayed posting this today. There's a birthday going on. A huge happy birthday to James. We love you so, so much and are thankful every single minute for your good health. You make us proud in so many ways. I am honoured to be your mum.
(you get your cuteness from me)

two embroidered books, two embroidered wraps
I'm not showing you the same thing as yesterday honest, not in detail anyway. The details are from the large wrap, the final edges, the final embellishments. The first image shows both of these wraps for books side by side. They could almost be the same piece of work if not for the size difference. The surface of the large wrap is now finished. Every edge embroidered, beaded, ribboned, bound. As we speak I have cloth on my ironing board which I am going to use to line this. Lining will lead to more edges, more beading. I'm almost sad that this one is nearly finished.
You're probably going to see it again tomorrow, lining in place, partially edged....

pieces, an embroidered book in progress
More
work on my little book, my embroidered cloth book. There is a new page
with cutwork and lots of beads and crystals. I'm probably going to
embroider at least another two pages for this before I put it together,
they will be backed with embroidered cloth too so there's still a way to
go.
I'm loving the colour contrasts with this one. It was inspired by the piece below...which I guess is obvious. There'll be more work on that one later today as I'm almost there, almost at the backing stage and I'm off to London on Friday where I shall be seeking out more of these colours in cloth and ribbon....can't wait.

design sheets
I was going to show you some embroidery today, it was all damp stretched ready to be photographed but I got distracted by these.
These are design sheets from my Uni days....mostly. There's also a couple of more recent ones here. I was making a video for my 'ledgers' class about design, design sheets, pattern and colour. It occured to me to make a video for you too, leaving out the information my group will get. (their video is much longer and much more informative) they haven't seen it yet either so it's a glimpse into class for them. (don't be scared lol....I'm not painting!)
I am so inspired by these today, really fired up.

embroidering a small wrap
The little wrap for an artist book has moved on considerably since you saw it here. The surface embroidery is complete and this now needs to be lined before I attach it to a little book I have in progress. The blue and orange sequins which came from a deconstructed necklace finish those seams off perfectly, they were just what I needed.

the second 9 inch stash square
My second nine by nine inch stash square, inspired by the first one, changed a little, altered but still cohesive. I showed you the first one yesterday, here.
As you can see there are lots of french knots on here, a little beading and some 'floaty' cloth circles. The actual embroidering of these pieces is extremely therapeutic, you kind of get lost in the rhythm and repetition but you wouldn't believe how long it takes to cut out the little cloth circles....or maybe you would.

recording colour, threads and embellishments
There's lots of progress in my new embroidery ledger which is evolving in class. Embroidery on the paper background page (which is new, which I put together directly on to the page), embroidery on that background is now finished. I have thread wrapped cards which are ready to be mounted on there too so next time in class we will start another page, another process of examining colour and embellishments from our source pieces.
This ledger will be crammed with all things embroidery. It will become a 'go to' reference for colour, texture and pattern and I'm certain it will serve me well over time.
In addition to my embroidery ledger I am continuing to work on the pieces I showed you yesterday whilst also creating another one of the pieces below. That second piece, (a second 9 inch square piece) is quite well advanced and I hope to damp stretch it later today. It won't be finsihed today but I like to damp stretch at every stage.

a smaller wrap
The piece I was working on in the video yesterday inspired me to create a smaller piece, a smaller wrap. This little wrap will protect a very small artist book which will have 4 x 4 inch pages. I had a dilemma however, adding embellishments to a seam which don't work for me today. They're going, they are gone.....

beading a tiny edge
A quite short video today (and an excuse to hide in my little shed/studio.) I'm gradually making progress with the wrap for my artist book. I seem to have shared a lot of this process on here, it's almost 'your' project. There are so many videos on here about this piece, videos about piecing, videos about embroidery, embellishment, edges, pinning...so many. If you haven't seen them you can click on the 'video' link in the category list on the right hand side of this page. That will take you there (this post will be first, just scroll past it)
This weekend I will be working hard on pieces for embroidery school, two classes, both exciting, both needing lots of stitch and lots of attention.

soft rolled embroidered book
My little rolled book of cloth and paper is finished. I added a simple ribbon string and delicate little toggles before simply tying the pages together. This piece is beautiful to handle. It's so soft and really delicate. It's now in the shop.
This morning I've been playing with stash squares and charm squares, titivating cloth with embroidery, beads and sequins. I was in my 'cave', my little workshop, my happy place. Embellishing cloth with tiny beads can become addictive, the repetition of it, the ability to go anywhere in your mind. That's what I'm going to do now, as soon as I get off this PC I'm going back to silk and seed beads. See you tomorrow. x

my ledger
There's a twelve month ledger class happening in Embroidery School. This is my third page, (we haven't been going long). Laid next to the page is my source, my inspiration, a piece of embroidered cloth mounted onto a cloth page. (another project, a cloth book, not part of ledger class but borrowed for the purpose of informing my design work)
The page here is concerned with examining colour, a colour study of sorts. Using paper, stitch, beads and crystals I am attempting to reflect the colour seen in my source embroidery. So far so good I think.
You might have noticed the absence of paint, of drawing, of conventional 'art'. I avoid those. They aren't my natural 'go to' in any sphere of creativity. Basically I am scared of drawing but there's more than one way to examine design and hopefully I am demonstrating that here.
Registration is still open for this class.

embroidery school stitching
For most of this morning I have been ensconced in my 'cave' making videos for 'stitch along, for embroidery school. This lovely pile of work was on my table. The wrap for my book is visible here too. That isn't part of embroidery school but I wanted it close just in case I was suddenly compelled to add something to it.
I was working on my little dress for class....this one....although it has changed an awful lot since this picture was taken and today it has changed again.
The area I was working on today is unseen as yet, class will get those videos later today. That won't be the end of it either....
I have a lot of stitching to do to complete today's piece.

rolling soft pages, an idea for a little book of embroidery
The soft embroidered pages I shared on here the day before yesterday have now been lined. Each of them has a reverse of pieced vintage lace and vintage trim. I now have a firm plan for these pieces, a soft rolled book of embroidery. The images here almost exclusively show the reverse of these 'pages' but when it's finished I will show the fronts, the embellished surfaces in more detail.
I speak about the 'putting together' of this and the rolling in the short video below.

charm square
It would be amazing to have twelve of these little hand embroidered charm squares, not exactly the same but each one complimenting the next. Creating this piece and the piece in the final image is the start of a new project in 'stitch along', my twelve month embroidery class. I'm going to move these on, follow the pattern and colour and create more of each size.
I showed you this one last week when it was partially worked here. I finished it last night, damp stretched it and hemmed it this morning.
I need to stop handling it, I will wear it out.

soft pages
These three pages will be brought together to form a little, soft rolled book. Made from delicate paper, soft cloth and lace these pieces roll beautifully. (I already tried) The edges are in need of a little more embellishment and I have started that with the tiny white pom poms and lemon thread. I'm also going to titivate the reverses a little, layer them up with lace maybe.
Once rolled I will bind them with a ribbon string.....

toggles and ribbon
Yesterday I told you I was going to play with my new silk chiffon ribbon......and I did. There are 6 toggles embellished with tiny seed beads, each of those also has a little buttonhole loop embroidered on the reverse to allow me to fasten them onto cloth. There is also a ribbon string with beads and a little lace. That ribbon string is now being placed into a little rolled artist book which has three paper and silk pages embellished with sequins and hand embroidery. I will show you that very soon.

silk chiffon ribbon
It's been a funny kind of week. I have the decorators in and have mostly been hiding in my studio but yesterday I went away for the day to visit my parents so that disrupted my creativity and today I was sent for more wallpaper so nothing creative has happened as yet. More supplies have arrived though and the silk chiffon ribbon is already making me drool.
Once I have finished beading the edge of the page you can see in the second image I am going to play with the ribbon and assess it's suitability for toggles.
03/19/2019
lemon
This piece started life as a practice drawstring edge when we were creating lots of drawstring channels in stitch along. It's developed quite a bit since then and is fast becoming a fully embellished surface. As there were no firm plans for this when it was started I've been wondering how best to use it, how best to show off the embroidery and I'm beginning to think it would make a rather nice wrap for a little book full of white and froth and lace.
You know what that means don't you? It means I need to also create a little book full of white and froth and lace. That definitely won't be a chore.

a little bit of stab stitch
The wrap for my hand made artist book is getting a little more attention today. Stab stitch is being used to secure a strip of ribbon on one panel. There are two panels on here which still need a lot of embellishment before I can move on to lining this cloth and then wrapping it around my artist book. Actually, the artist book also needs more work, I may take that out this afternoon and do some thinking, make an assessment of exactly what is still needed for that.
Meanwhile a little chat, a short video.

five by five inch charm square
Can you see a theme developing here? The new piece in the first two images is a five by five inch charm square or at least it will be when it's finished. The little square was inspired by the larger piece of embroidery which also inspired the ribbon of fabric circles. These embroidered works are taking shape and being developed in my embroidery class but in truth they would also fit into my ledgers class except that one is in its early stages and purely paper based at the moment.
There are connections happening though that's for sure and by the time we get round to cloth and embroidery in Ledger class I will be inspired by these pieces and newly invigorated, ready for a whole different collection to begin.

papers, ribbons, a ledger page
I've been in my studio all morning working on pages in my ledger for 'ledgers, a record of stitch' my online class. Class hasn't seen the results of this yet, all will be revealed to them in the next week or so.
Today though I mainly want to speak about my new studio and how liberating it is in terms of my creativity. I'm still in the process of moving things in there but each day it's becoming more organised and at long last I know where most things are after months of never being able to find anything since we moved here. Later this week, when it is more 'finished' I will take some photos for you. The biggest bonus I have discovered so far is the ability to just leave a piece when I have finished working, just leave it all out on the worktop. I no longer need to clear the dining table and tidy everything away, it can all be left where it sits ready for next time.

playing with trims
I've been playing a little with this today. It would make a very pretty edge or seam adornment. I have a couple of ideas for more, for variations which seems appropriate as I am a bit of an edge and seam obsessive.
The little video illustrates the movement of this, something I couldn't capture in a photograph.

toggles on an edge
Remember the toggles I made the other day? (you can see that here if you missed it)
They are finished now, minimal embroidery secures them and they all have little loops on the reverse now which will be used to secure them to cloth. They were specifically created to use on my wrap. They look exactly as I hoped they would.
(stitch along girls.....I am posting another video for you on the class blog in an hour or so as I want to progress my 'squares'.)

Ledgers, recording embroidery
This is where we are up to in Ledgers class (which is still open for registration here) The class group is actually way ahead of me, they are able to race off and develop their work whereas I must take a more measured approach, follow a loose timetable, plan the next move. The enthusiasm in all of my classes always blows me away along with the innovation and originality of the work produced so I'd like to say thank you to all of them.
We are in the very early stages of this year long programme and here I have just touched the surface of the basics. I'm hoping that as we progress these pages will become more and more crammed with information and inspiration. This ledger will become a valuable resource for future ideas and future embroidery.

toggles
I love making toggles with ribbon. I love making toggles full stop but they are so quick when you make them with ribbon. These ones need to be finished off, stitched, have a means of fastening attached but the rolling is done, it's used to be the rolling that I found trickiest but not any more.
I've got a new toy too. I've got a mini tripod for my phone! Who knew you could get a mini tripod for your phone?! Wow. Why didn't you tell me? Brace yourselves....I will be playing with it a lot......

9 x 9 inches
This little square of cloth is finished and I am really happy with it. I love the movement of the circular embellishments, it's a joy to handle. When you last saw it there were only patterend circles on the surface, the white cut outs were added last.
This piece has prompted the start of another project in 'stitch along' and in a lot of ways it feeds into 'ledger' class too although it is unseen in that group. Later in ledger class this type of surface design will become very appropriate so even if this actual piece isn't used the process which resulted in this piece will be replicated.

adding beads to an edge
This morning was my first time working in my new, as yet unfinished studio. I have been so desperate to get in there, I just can't wait. At the moment it's equiped with an emergency table. It works, it's sufficient. As I've been moving small amounts of stuff in there I've been seeing things which could be worked on more, which although 'finished' wouldn't suffer if I played with them a little more. With that in mind, once I had made one of my videos for 'Ledger' class I began to add danglies to the edge of this page .
(there will most likely be more and more little videos on here now I have a dedicated space to work, free from interuptions)

adjustments
I've had to make adjustments to my wrap. It's all explained in the short video today. (at the end of this post)
Meanwhile I am discovering more and more treasure as I continue to 'sort' out my new studio.
Tomorrow I will be making videos in the studio for the very first time. I have a house full of people this weekend so I will be able to lock myself away and ignore them. I can't wait.
(they aren't guests as such....it's my son and his girlfriend using my house as a convenient hotel....it's ok to hide away from them lol, they know where the kettle is.)
Do you remember this?
A lot more work has been done to this since you saw it last and it has sparked an idea for a new project in 'Stitch Along' which I discussed with the group yesterday. You can be part of that, registration is still open. You can read more here.
Tomorrow's videos however will be about Ledgers class....again, registration for that is also still open and you can read more here.
At the moment we are working on colour studies. This is my first page. (you've seen it bofore)
As usual the group is racing ahead of me but I guess that means they are inspired right?

beads and pom poms, a pin pillow
A pin pillow (6 x 6 inches approx).
You saw this in progress a few weeks ago and it's been finished for a while. I got sidetracked with other stuff and forgot to show you.....sorry. There is ribbon across the reverse too but I forgot to take pictures of that............sorry again. It's just two simple strips secured with hand stitch which compliment the front, the pom poms, the big gold thread beads.
This little pillow was made using the same colour palette as my 'wrap' which you have seen a lot of lately. There will be an update on that tomorrow.
(I am gradually moving things into my new studio. I am still waiting for the worktops and cabinets but meantime I will spend the weekend working in there, getting used to the space, creating on an old, temporary table. There's still a little bit of work to do but while I wait I intend to enjoy my new space)

sample books, embroidery swatches part 2
As if by magic I was looking for something and came across another two sample/swatch cloth books. I spoke about these earlier in the week if you remember. The last two of these books inspired me to my little cloth circle piece. These two today could lead anywhere.
Later today I will begin to move things into my new studio. I am beyond excited. It doesn't have worktops or wall cabinets yet, (I'm at the mercy of a very busy carpenter) but I do have a table, a cupboard and some drawers. This is the start of something amazing, my very own space where I can shut the door, make videos at will regardless of what is happening elsewhere in the house, work on my sewing machine whenever the fancy takes me, shut myself away and create whenever, anytime, all day, all night if I want.
I may not be seen for some time.

little cloth circles
The new piece here is the silk dupion with the little cloth circles, cross stitch, beads, French knots and sequins. I was inspired to create this after looking through my cloth books yesterday.
The new piece is laid alongside other embroidered cloth squares which have been hiding in a little box I just discovered, I haven't seen it since I moved here. Happy days! (I am finding things every day, eventually I will know where everything is....I will)
Anyway, after discovering the little box of treasure I got to thinking......I have enough embroidered squares to create another cloth book of samples. (watch this space)
The new piece, the circle piece isn't finished yet. I intend to cover the whole surface with this embellishment. I was actually considering using it as I would a purchased cloth, meaning I was considering cutting it up to use in other things. I may make another piece for that purpose.

sample books, embroidery swatches
I have several of these sample/embroidered swatch books. They are such a wonderful resource to have, to pick up and examine not only when you are in need of inspiration but also 'just because'. These have been out today in the hope they can shake me up a little, generate a few new ideas, keep the brain ticking.
Whilst 'the wrap' is ongoing other things can happen alongside that piece. I'm thinking something 'pretty', maybe pinks and lemons....
(another quick video. These are so easy to create and allow me to show more)
