For centuries women have used cloth as a tool of comfort and as an expression of beauty within their homes. Creating cloth for warmth, cloth for shelter, our female predecessors embellished these linens with hand stitch using laborious and time consuming techniques thereby enhancing the functional beauty of objects which enveloped and protected their families. Inspired by these women I hope my creations pay tribute to and recognise the devotion expressed in cloth by our female ancestors .

''the use of traditional often time consuming process alludes to the devotion of a mother''. c K. A. Ruane 2007

The strategy of settling into your own world of stitch and cloth sounds like the right one. It's a reality of sorts, after all!

I baked cake yesterday, and there is more left for today. I will enjoy some for you, Karen! I also settled into my own sewing world for the better part of two hours without interruption. Lovely is an understatement! I'm going to try to embrace another hour today. :) I will definitely put the kettle on for that.

and here i've been spelling it pipping - well! and was that you, i thought i saw a naked lady running out to the shop for a couple of take-outs! i won't tell anyway promise. just a quick question about pillows, will you be mentioning round pillows? i find the concept of round hard to execute as a pillow - to me the measuring is more of a trick. there doesn't have to be anything round really demonstrated but maybe just discussed in passing. the idea of having a small ledger also accompanying a pillow as part of the memory of the cloth is such a wonderful concept. sounds like a very happy class...where is the line forming for the cake.

I dont do round pillows but I can utter the words round pillows in passing. The cake line snakes around the corner....

just make it square and cut out a circle the size you want. it's easier that way. you don't lose much on the edges.

but round pillows have no corners.

Im partial to a corner

So happy, Karen. I am actually home for two of the three weeks of the class and have just signed up. I wanted to do a pin pillow and if I keep my project small, I feel it is doable. I might go a little crazy with two flickr groups to be in at once but I accept the challenge. :)

love, oh how I love the little square dotty things...the piece is wonderful and sings an ever more beautiful song with all you are adding with stitch. One day later this year I will, yes I will, be able to take a class with you...what delight that will be, for certain sure.

The new class sounds fabulous, love the idea of the art pieces to go with the pillows. Look forward to seeing all the gorgeousness that comes from it

Karen, I just registered for your new mini-class. It sounds manageable for me. I like the pillow-idea and that it can be made small - as I like small things - and I have long been curious about the ledger and finally I like that there is no deadline to finish something.

Would love to take the new class, yes, why yes I would. Tell me, are ten more hours in each of the days for the three weeks included in the fee? Really do wish we humans hadn't been created being hardwired to have to sleep!
