paper and cloth...... collage
More creativity is happening here to further the ''artist book'' schedule. Paper, fabric and stitch have been combined to create a large collaged sheet which has since been torn, separated, dissected into individual scraps of stitch and texture. These will be embellished a little more with hand stitch before being added to pages.
My second artist book should be completely finished later today, crammed with samples, papers and stitched cloth.

padded applique and tiny, fiddly Suffolk puffs.
This piece is finished now in terms of surface embroidery. There is a row of padded applique ''flowers'' along with a row of very tiny Suffolk puffs which took a lot of fiddling but were very definitely worth it. Still to do? Still to stitch? The lining, the sides, hand finish the edges and add a few more titivation's to finish it off.

artist book, a short video.
The second ''artist book'' of the current series is progressing although as you will see in this short video there is still quite some way to go. For that reason, later today I will be stitching papers......
there is a video show and tell of the first artist book here.

three fourteen inch seams
Something new, a fourteen inch strip of pieced cloth with three seams running down the centre. Two seams are secured and embellished with bullion knots, the third with beaded bullion knots. There are several tiny little cloth titivation's ready to go on here too, I just need to decide where to put those.
This piece is ten inches wide and I will most likely fold it in half length ways to create a tiny pocket. First though I want to finish my row of little flowers, as you can see there are two of those at the moment and I reckon I will need to embroider another twelve. I just realised that will be fourteen flowers....on fourteen inches of cloth. Who knew? Not me, not planned, I'm not that clever.

embroidery school, embroidered samples.
Yesterday it was paper from embroidery school, today it's cloth, embroidery, samples. You've pretty much got a broad overview now of what's happening in my latest class. What you don't have is any idea of the wonderful work being created by the group, the innovation, the enquiry, the testing, the pushing of ideas that is being created by the others. All I can say is look at this work and then multiply my paltry talents by a million percent and you will be nearly there such is the level of their creativity.
Having said that....I am happy with my efforts too. I gathered these pieces together for these photographs and there is a lovely ''weight'' to these when they are laid over each other. Lifting up a corner to peek at what's beneath is very satisfying. In isolation these pieces aren't ''all that''....put them together however and the sense of an evolving body of work is there. I must remind myself to do that more often with sampling, to consider pieces as a collection rather than individual works.

embroidery school paper work
Mounted samples, A3 sketchbooks, safe places for my stitched cloth and my embroidered paper......a library of information, a record of my creativity and a source of inspiration in the future, that's the plan. That is what I hope to achieve by carefully mounting samples and exploring design on paper. This is a little of what we are doing in embroidery school.
My A3 sketchbook has only two samples mounted inside at the moment, there's a long way to go but it's progress all the same.

lace and webs of thread
I have a ''gathering'' coming up in London soon for which I am supplying little workshop packs. With that in mind I set about creating lace cloth on Saturday.....then got distracted by other lace, a few paper scraps and some spotty stuff. What can I say.....
Some lace cloth was created, you can see that here (it's very visible on the left of the third image). The other pieces? They are mine, all mine, for little artist books, for collage, for playtime.

six inches by four inches
All the pieces of this puzzle fell into place last night. A tiny pocket emerged with an embroidered reverse and a decorative lining. If you look closely at the reverse there are tiny seed beads too....a new fascination. I haven't been as excited about beads for years, mostly they haven't figured in my thought process at all but now I can't seem to get them out of my mind. This is something else ticked off my list....a big smiley face was also added alongside that tick as I am so happy with this very cute little pocket.

little samples, compositions, crammed artist books
It's all about scraps here at the moment and it will be for some time. I am part way through creating my second ''crammed'' artist book in the manner of this one. (there is a video in the link which some of you may not have seen)
There is something very satisfying about gathering little scraps which may otherwise have been discarded, adding stitch, a few beads maybe, complimentary papers and little bits of lace, turning something insignificant into a decorative piece of sampling and securing that safely within the pages of a hand made artist book.
Monitor update.....I think it's all in the tilt. This new monitor is bigger than my last one, tilting seems to help. It's either that or I buy a very high chair!

ingredients
A front, a reverse and a partial lining......pieces of a pocket, a tiny pocket, four by six inches. It's small but no less fiddly. The lining will have embroidery as will the reverse. There will be titivation and don't forget the toggles.
I'm still not sure about this monitor, (it's new) My eyes definitely don't like it and I have fiddled with it. I guess I will have to fiddle a little more.

two A3 sketchbooks
In the spirit of ''artist books'' I have bought myself two A3 sketchbooks. These sketchbooks will become my own personal ''artist books''. They will be filled with ''keepers'', samples I need, samples I will use in workshops and embroidery school. One is for mainly cloth based samples, (a few paper and cloth mixes may appear in that one, the main thing is the sample will be predominantly cloth). The second one is for paper based sampling, design sheets and the like. At the end of this post is an image of the pieces which form my first page.
In other news.....storm Doris. A husband stuck on a train going nowhere in the middle of nowhere up North, a son stuck on a train going nowhere down South. A never ending stream of telephone calls and plans gone awry. It's been one of those days. Stitch will make it better, I know it will.

scraps
You saw these little samples last week I think. Since then they have been added to little pages for a new artist book, artist book number two. There is a little pile of other scrappy bits which is growing too, they need a little more attention before they can be placed on pages, before this book starts to take ''real'' shape.
When I was in London I bought lots of beads and buttons....they will be making their way into this work I am sure of it. The first thing I need to do though is figure out how to store them properly, how to store them so I can lay my hands on them easily and not have to scour the whole house for hours trying to find them. With my track rec0rd it won't be easy but at least the will is there....it's a start.

toggles are fast becoming an addiction
I'm back..did you miss me? London was fab, London is always fab. Returning to a dead PC monitor not so fab. It's replaced...ordered at 17.55 pm last night and delivered at 19.05 pm. Now that's what I call service. However.....it's new, it's bright and then some, my eyes are complaining already.....so, these images. Are they OK? It will take some getting used to I think.
This work? Well I know I said I wasn't making any more pockets for a while but I changed my mind. This will be a tiny one. And anyway, it's an excuse to make more toggles which are fast becoming my latest addiction.
I must dash, I have suitcases to unpack and a loft ladder to climb.

silk, pom poms, paper, a toggle and beads
I just can't help myself, as soon as this artist book is finished I begin stitching little scraps of cloth and paper for the next one. The pages are already cut too......I'm on a roll. I may also have been heard to say I was finished with pockets for a while. Ha....don't believe it. This afternoon I am going to put another one together, the base anyway. I can't fight the urge....
I'm going away for a few days.....I will be missing until Tuesday. I can hear the sigh of relief from here. Be good whilst I am gone.

beginning
The very beginning of the next artist book. Paper has been cut, an extra, extra wide spine and pages...there may be more of those. Small samples, small stitched scraps have been gathered...there will definitely be more of those. This is my starting point, my ''jumping off'' point, it should all flow seamlessly from here.
I have made you a short video about this one. I will show you that tomorrow.

pocket number three
The last of three pockets, you saw the first two here. Gimp fastenings, (purely decorative), embroidered lining, vintage white cloth, silk velvet, applique and more gimp than you can shake a stick at. The list has been ticked, pockets are done.....for now.....

stitched scraps
Black and white patterned wallpaper, two different scraps of lace, hand embroidery and a few beads....more little scraps, mini pieces of stitch for my artist books. (then there's the centre piece in the last image), a scrap of cream paper, silver running through it with added bullion and French knots. I think I could do this forever. A production line has never appealed to me but a production line of these little bits would maybe capture my attention.
This book is now finished, every page decorated with stitched paper or cloth or both. I will make you a short video show and tell of that later this week.

two
Two finished pockets with the third one almost complete.....the list has been ticked and that's very satisfying. Three will be my limit for embroidered pockets......for now. I am too excited about artist books to start another one. Then there's class, sampling to be done, ideas to explore, cloth scraps to stitch, paper based design work to extend and develop.....the list is still long even though two things have been ticked off.
Today will be about creating surfaces for my London gathering which is fast approaching. It's highly likely that snippets for pages, for artist books will spring from that work too.

a pocket for a book
Lots of images today....and you're seeing this again but I can't apologise because I could look at it forever. A simple white pocket now keeps this safe when I'm not drooling over it and there are a couple of new pages, tiny samples which you haven't seen before. And still it's not finished......four more samples I think. To be honest I think I got a little carried away, I never intended it to be this crammed, this much work, this many hours of stitch but I am so happy it's evolved like this...I wouldn't have it any other way. Next task? Start another one.....

backs and fronts
Two fronts, two backs....two pockets almost made. They need to be put together now and lined. My extra titivation's arrived for the piece with the white gimp fastenings. Pom poms, I was waiting for pom poms. Two rows of those have now been hand stitched into place meaning it's good to go, to be finished. For the reverse of the piece with the soft pinks and green I have applied a strip of vintage cloth which is secured with bullion and french knots and has gimp spilling from underneath.
Next time you see these they will be finished, hand edged and lined. Now I'm off to try and make a cloth pouch for this....a trial piece, a sample. French seams will be involved.

Artist book.....
It's a marathon not a sprint.....this artist book, this artist book in a new format and with an initial plan to make four. My artist books usually have six pages and twelve sides, eight stitched samples and other titivation's. This one has twelve pages, twenty four sides, up to now there are twelve stitched samples with plans for more. The new format was intended to allow these little books to close easier, a wider spine facilitating a cover which would close. I think I'll have to forget that plan....I get carried away with stitch, beads, ribbons and scraps. This is crammed already and it isn't half finished yet.
Will I be able to achieve my goal of having four of these finished in six weeks? I'm not sure. It's looking unlikely. I love how this one is evolving though so I won't compromise on content, on attention to detail. I would rather have two books which I love rather than four books which disappoint me.
02/07/2017
vintage white, pinks and pale greens
A completed front....now there's the reverse to attend to. Said reverse still needs to be pieced, the cloth needs to be found and pressed and pinned and basted but for now I am content with the front. And the fastenings.....another addiction.
My pieces, fronts and reverses are stacking up. This one needs to be finished too, lined and titivated....I make plans for finishing, for the sewing machine part and the edging by hand but then I get distracted. Mostly it's artist books distracting me at the moment. Tomorrow it will be something else.

gathering
Yesterday afternoon, in an effort to achieve clarity I played a little. Stitched paper pieces, stitched paper and cloth pieces, laid out, moved around, all the time thinking and gleaning ideas. How many more of these do I need? Which ones appeal, which are calling to be included in workshop packs?
With reference to the ''how many more do I need'' question.....I can never have too many. There's no limit is the answer to that one. Regarding clarity on which pieces fit the workshop pack bill....I don't have any..... clarity that is. I think I need to be ruthless. Get my head down and stitch like a maniac then divvy up the results.
I then got to thinking, wouldn't these make great wall pieces, just like this, collaged, joined together....paper wall art. That's set off another train of thought, another idea I didn't need. (remind me of that next time I have creative brain freeze)
Meanwhile.....the offending white pom poms are no more.....

paper, lace and pom poms
Late night embroidery on a scrap of lace attached to an piece of stitched paper......with added pom poms. In the dimness of my midnight oil, my nocturnal embroidery hours these pom poms looked amazing. In the light of day, when photographed, not so amazing. Too white....
They don't look dreadful, I could actually live with this, leave it as it is. Trouble is I have more pom poms, more suitable pom poms and I can't ignore them, can't ignore them saying ''I would look so much better on there''. It's not a huge chore to remove five white pom poms and replace them with old, aged, vintage, (quite possibly grubby looking) pom poms.
I am mindlessly playing with bits of paper a lot recently. I have no idea what I am going to do with all my finished sampling from this. Initially this play was supposed to inform contents of workshop packs for a London cake day which is fast approaching. Has it? Not that I'm aware....it's time to get the playtime head off and replace it with the workshop pack head.

paper, lace, embroidery and overstitching
Rip paper, cut up embroidery, cut up lace and stitch them all together....this is the result. Some old sampling put to use for new surfaces on which to stitch along with tiny snippets to decorate ledger pages. This is evidence of my Friday afternoon endeavours. The large pieces here will be treated like printed cloth, bought cloth. They will have embroidery added to the surface, they might be used in patchwork, they might be used in applique. These will be starting points not finished works.

white and silk velvet
This is the piece I hoped to show you yesterday but the light was too poor for photographs. The last image is how it looked before I worked on it some more last night. Silk velvet is beautiful cloth, luxurious, soft....but unruly....it won't stay where you put it even with millions of pins in it, it slips, it moves and sharp, straight seams are an almost impossible dream but I'm embracing that, it's part of the charm.
I bought coloured gimp and have been feeding the fastening addiction a little since it arrived. I'm hoping these and a few more I intend to make will live on this piece. Over the weekend I hope to work on this some more and also finish this as the titivation's I have been waiting for arrived this morning. There may also be some frothy lace creation going on along with more page creation for ledgers.....

one of those days
It's one of those days today. Those days when you can't ''get going'', you dither, you flounder and grasp around for something to hold onto. I'm sure it's the weather...it's oppressively dark, it's gloomy and wet, it's foggy, it's seeping into my mood or at least it was. I started a new piece of work last night...white, silk velvet, tangled gimp. Try as I might I just can't get decent images of it despite spending an age on photoshop. Searching around for something to show you I visited my old blog. My mood lifted, it lifted because I rediscovered these lacy pieces and these lacy pieces have given me ideas.....yes, those elusive things, ideas.
02/01/2017
French knots
Surface embroidery on this piece is finished. I need to add the ''cabbages'' you saw the other day but I also want to add something else, similar to the cabbages but which need to be ordered..... I have ordered some but they haven't arrived yet. (the cabbages are completely hand made by yours truly....the other things won't be)
Circles of French knots have been scattered across this, over all areas except the velvet and the reverse is embroidered too. ( I will show you that when this is completely finished)
Meanwhile......whilst I am waiting for my other titivation's to arrive I started a new piece using these fabrics. I don't like it. I am going to unpick and rethink.

pages
The pages of my first little ''artist book'' are filling up slowly. Slowly is good, I'm in no rush. I will call these pages ''considered''.....I would guess there are around another six ''sides'' to fill. It won't happen quickly.
The response to my ''cabbages'' yesterday was amazing! Thank you. You inspired me to make more last night.
This morning I got a wonderful surprise.....a delivery of beautiful flowers. Each flower head was wrapped individually....wow, such attention to detail. I love them, thank you.

buttons, fastenings, adornments
Little fastenings, little adornments for the next pocket. They will sit on the silk velvet when the pocket surface is embellished completely, when the other things I have planned for it are added. I'm aware these look like little cabbages....I like cabbages, they are layered, they have natural pockets, what's not to love about a cabbage?
There are five of these. They took an extraordinary amount of time to make, you wouldn't believe me if I told you. Despite that fact I want to make more. I have a love for the time consuming and fiddly......but I guess you knew that already.

embroidery school, progress
So this is what's happening in embroidery school, as well as the paper piece you saw here. Cloth is our main focus and this piece is the first sample of what I hope will be many. They are just that, samples. Surfaces of pieced cloth embellished with stitch samples and technique samples. New to this piece are a tiny hand stitched buttonhole and a little pocket which has a button with a loop closure.
Videos for our next lesson were made this morning and next time you see this it will look different again....add a little something here and there and these pieces transform and grow quickly feeding ideas for more pieces, more sampling and further along the line finished pieces of work.

wrapping with gimp....the next one
White silk Dupion, Ivory silk velvet, gimp wrapping and bullion knots....the start of another little pocket. I have laid two hankies at the side of this, they are auditioning to be part of the decorative and embroidered surface. I think they pass with flying colours.
This afternoon I will play with hankie placement, cut off a few of these hankie corners and move them around on here. I will keep you posted.

paperwork from embroidery school
We are working with paper in embroidery school, a slight diversion from our sampling with cloth and thread. There is thread, there are even little snippets of cloth but paper surfaces are the main focus of this exercise. We've introduced tiny bits of silver too.......a completely different surface to paper and cloth. This will be a slow burner, we are back to embroidery on cloth in the next lesson. There's nothing wrong with having a little paper distraction piece lurking in the background though.
A few of you have asked about these boxes from yesterday.
They are from Ted Baker. I have only ever seen them at Christmas and they come filled with shower gel, hand lotion, lip balm and other toiletries. The pink one was purchased half price in this years post Christmas sale, the other one was bought half price last year. In all honesty I buy them purely for the box. I do use the products but they are stacking up! I won't need to buy any shower gel for quite some time.

creativity
A few images today taken over the last few days. It's good t record your time in photographs. You get to see how much or even how little you have achieved over a period of time. You will be familiar with everything in these images i think....maybe you haven't seen the boxes before but I'm pretty sure you have seen everything else....

toggles
The silk velvet strip, leave it plain or embellish? I went with embellish. I guess you knew I would. Seven toggles, all hand made using rolled cloth, a few slip stitches and little coloured beads. This surface is now finished. I've settled on this being a pocket, now I have to put the reverse together and think about the lining. There will hopefully be hankies involved in both those pieces....now I need to raid my stash.
(I forgot to mention....there's a little embroidered button under one of the hankie edges too. You can see that in the second image)

with added hankie corners
Some of these images are similar but I just couldn't decide which ones to leave out....it looks so pretty on camera. It looks pretty in real life too but somehow the photography allows it to sparkle more brightly. This is the silk piece from yesterday, the piece with the beaded silk velvet edges. Adding three folded and stitched hankie corners has transformed it I think. Across the top of the largest hankie corner I have added another row of bullion knots with brightly coloured French knots and there's a tiny run of little flower embellishments alongside that section which are more clearly visible in the second image.
This piece makes me smile, makes me happy. Liza doesn't think the velvet section needs any embellishment,
love the sheen on the silk velvet, it almost doesn't need anything else doing to it - but I know you will!!
She knows me so well.....I just can't help myself and I do have a plan for the silk velvet.

beaded loops and tiny stitching
It's a bit of this and that today. There's a tiny scrap which came away from a larger piece but has now been transformed into a page for a new artist book and there's a new piece in progress. I'm not sure what the new piece will be yet. I started it to satisfy a craving I had to stitch beaded loops onto silk velvet. Who knows where these cravings come from or why we are compelled....
The artist book is some way from being finished. There may only be a dozen or so tiny pages but what to put on each of those pages requires me to stretch my imagination and ponder for what seems like forever so please don't hold your breath for that to be finished. I'm hoping to make six of those....no pressure then. I'm not going to push it though. If I make six then great, if I don't then no problem.
We are making beaded loops, sample cloths and wonderful things with paper, collage and stitch in embroidery school. It's not too late to join us and you get to keep the videos forever, yes....and ever...so there's no rush to make anything at all, you can merely sit at the back, drink tea, eat cake and watch. You can read more here....

scraps becoming sample pieces
Last night I played a little. I took a scrap of stitched cloth and a scrap of stitched paper and wondered how they might live together. Here's the result. It's quite small, 6 x 5 inches....it's precious, delicate, light as a feather too. There are French knots embroidered using pale pink silk thread. There are bullion knots with matt gold bead added to them as a finishing touch and there is a strip of vintage pom pom trim forming the seam between the two pieces used to create this. Matt gold beads are also suspended across an open area.
The area with the patterned cloth, that has a paper base. The other, whiter area is silk Habotai. A tiny piece of this broke away from the main body, you can see that in the top corner of the second image. That tiny piece may well find its way onto a ledger page..............

Two little embroidered samples, the first pages for my new ledger, my new artist book idea. Hooks and eyes, beads, bullion knots, coton a broder, silk thread, silk velvet, metallic silk tissue and stitched paper....
My collection of stitched papers is growing rapidly, I now have piles of it. Piles of stitched paper and mountains of cloth scraps equals inspiration. There's no excuse for not being creatively charged now, I best keep going , crack on while the oomph is there.

I'm in the early stages of creating new ledgers, new artist books. This time I'm playing with a different construction, a more open format which will allow the pages to be filled without preventing the ledger closing....at least that's the plan. At the moment most of the pages are bare. One has a little paper bead, another has a small textured, stitched paper collage and here you can see a little embroidery happening on silk velvet which will be used for another page.
I will soon be working to a similar theme in ''embroidery school'' too...lots of composition on paper, pages, (a different size to these) paper sheets and paper samples for my London cake day. Cloth won't be forgotten though, you have my word.

embroidery school
You
would be forgiven for thinking I had abandoned cloth, that because of
the amount of paper based work I have shown on here recently I had given
all my cloth away, was no longer in the habit of practising embroidery
on fabric. Wrong.....and here's the proof, a small sampler taking shape
over in embroidery school.
It still needs work, lots of titivation still needs to happen but I
love how it's evolving. Pretty Liberty prints , beads and hand
embroidery stitches along with octagons and hexagons. I haven't yet
decided what comes next for this surface but I'm in no hurry as we are
soon to be distracted by paper in class too......

Liberty fabric, paper, octagons.
A look back at the past week or so....lots of things going on mostly with paper and Liberty fabric. The Liberty fabric is playing a part in ''embroidery school''. Tomorrow I will show you some of my work from there, I've been stitching happily on white with little bits of patterned cloth.
The post man brought me some new threads to play with this week, the memory thread. He also brought me a beautiful piece of lace, a gift...(last image) I do love my post man!

a collection of surfaces and a possibility for a new ledger
My collection of surfaces for ledgers, for embroidery, for collage and design sheets is growing. It's a good thing to have variety, to have different choices but I need to start focusing. I need to choose a few of these, decide on the most appropriate pieces and then create ten of each for workshop packs.
Of course I will have other uses for these, one of those being as inserts, pages, compositions for some artist books I wish to put together. Yesterday I played with a new format for those little books. My test piece is here in these images. I think it will work but first I need to work on some pages to see how it responds to that, how the weight and volume of samples and stitch affects how this ledger sits, how it opens and closes.
There is a short Instagram video showing these surfaces here.

bullion knots with blue and white
In my quest to continue with the type of work I showed you yesterday I have been titivating a scrap of stitched paper. Pieces like this need a stock of scraps to pull from...that is what this is. It's quite therapeutic to stitch a row of bullion knots onto collaged, stitched paper. The surface is obviously very different to cloth yet it has it's own unique appeal.
I have plans for a lot more work like the piece I showed you yesterday. More collage needs to be put together, more paper needs to be stitched to scraps of fabric. There is new lace on order for a lace cloth/paper combo I wish to make too so prepare yourself for quite a few ''scrappy, paper, collage'' posts over the next ten days or so.
Cloth hasn't been completely abandoned, don't worry. There is embroidery on cloth happening in ''embroidery school'' and I hope to give you a glimpse of that sometime soon. We have been open for almost a week now. You're not too late to join us if you'd like to be part of a wonderful group of creative people. There is more information here.

blue and white French knots with gridded paper
Yesterday afternoon was very productive......an idea was formed and this is the result. This is almost 100 percent what I have been aiming for, what I could partially visualise yet couldn't seem to get all the pieces together. Hopefully I'm off now, on a roll, will be able to create more of these with different colours, different papers, different snippets of cloth along with a few stitches....
This morning I made a video for ''embroidery school''. I talked this through with my group. It helped. (you will be getting that video shortly girls) Chatting about stuff.....it always helps even if you're only talking to yourself.

more paper play
The long narrow strip here is a continuation of play from yesterday. It's more focused though, I'm clearer with regard to where I am going with all this. Ledgers are being revisited and laid alongside the new work....more ideas for combining aspects of both. The same applies to the embroidered sample here....all these pieces are ideas I want to combine, mix and match and take forward to create finished paper and cloth works.
The plan now is to create more delicate collaged and stitched papers, add cloth to some, stitch on selected areas, maybe add beads, gimp, tiny scraps of silver....I then hope to have a mass of sheets, pages and ledger inserts....

moving sampling forward....
Stitch has been added to a paper sample and one of my pillow tops from here has been commandeered and added to a paper sample...all in the name of sampling, moving things forward, testing.....trying to light the spark which will take me to the next step.
In truth I already know what I want to create...and it isn't pillows. I just don't want to be predictable or boring but I guess I make what I make and that's why you come here right? I need to be making samples and workshop materials for our London cake day yet those samples are getting eaten up by my playing. Maybe if I satisfy my need to play I can create samples after that.
