For centuries women have used cloth as a tool of comfort and as an expression of beauty within their homes. Creating cloth for warmth, cloth for shelter, our female predecessors embellished these linens with hand stitch using laborious and time consuming techniques thereby enhancing the functional beauty of objects which enveloped and protected their families. Inspired by these women I hope my creations pay tribute to and recognise the devotion expressed in cloth by our female ancestors .

still here....

Nearly a full week since my last ramblings. A perfect illustration of the chaotic state of my brain, not my life, my brain. I just don't know where the time has gone really I don't. O.K. I have been to work, done some christmas shopping, continued to expand my fragment, even managed a tiny bit of housework but still, not much to show for a full week. And now I'm there, fragment wise I mean, my chaotic brain will not decide what to do next. I have arrived at a conclusion, (top image) and as you can see I got carried away with my scissors on the part of this I showed you last, (2nd image). Quite a lot of it has been chopped off, (for the good of the piece) at least that's what I thought at the time, still, I think it's working now.
I made this to add on, to expand. I love it, it's even better in the flesh so to speak and feels lovely in your hand. More white on white, vinatage lace and a steady hand with the scissors.

First I tried it next to the existing piece this way, not quite right though,

then I tried it this way, that's more like it I think.

Now I can't decide whether to put it in the shop.......why.....well a few reasons. Firstly, how much? Counting diligently the hours it has taken me and despite not profiteering shamelessly it would still be quite expensive. Secondly, these are selling quite well but I ask myself how many people are out there really like me who are happy to have these and keep them just to ''look at''? Hence if I put it in the shop and it sits there for ages it becomes old, stale and I couldn't bear to do that to it. So I can't decide, not today anyway, I will have to ruminate and cogitate for a while.

Which leads me on to my next thought. I would like to make these into functional, useable art. Put them on a cloth somehow, with an edge to stop fraying, make them more able to withstand handling. I would like to do more collage with them, a collage on cloth. They take such a long time they would have to be small, maybe too small for a hanging. So there you have it, the brain is overloaded with if's but's and maybe's that are only solvable by moi! What am I going to do?........... keep stitching and hope it comes right, what else is there?
Finally, the eagle eyed amongst you will have noticed the facebook widget top right. I now have a facebook page, have a look, be a fan, you would make my day. It is mightily addictive though, maybe that's where my week has gone!

Hello Karen, Merry Christmas to you. I wish you a very happy New Year. I have truly enjoyed reading and admiring your stithcing this past year. Truly lovely in every way. You have been very inspirational to venture out in my stitching. I just bought a book called Mountmellick Embroidery: Inspired by Nature. I have come to love the white on white look. I have bought all the lovely threads too and a kit so after the holidays I am going to give it a go. Is your stitching method Mountmellick or white on white or??? Hugs Judy

Go on with your chaotic brain! I do like your chaotic brain production :)

Something intrigues me: when you start cutting this fragment did your hand shiver a little bit? and how do you manage in order to keep all the embroidery stitches??? It's a mystery for me and I did Ohhhhhh's! and Ahhhhh's! looking at it... still doing!

I would be terrified to cut that fragment. The result has been worth it though. I am sure that you will find something you are happy with after you have played with the fragments a bit longer

Facebook will eat you alive! I am trying to go there less as it eats up all my time. These framents are just beautiful Karen, I can see why you would be in such a quandry as to which way to go with them. I am sure you will figure it out though. I have faith in you!

Keep on stitching, we love it. The white on white is so delicate and it looks lovely with the touch of coloured embroiedery peeping through. Such treasures.

Thanks for supportive comment on blog. Feeling much better and can't wait for the beads.

This work here is stunning. I always find that the difference between 'art' and more 'functional work' is a difference in price whihc isn't always good.

Maybe a beautiful unique, exquisite and special bag that these become part of, that you can charge more money for?! A very delicate and special, special occasions one.

I love this piece!!!

I am now a fan on your facebook page. It will be interesting to see how the facebook thing goes. It is such an odd thing, fun though.

Have a great Weekend Karen!

Hi Karen, I'm not on Facebook - am holding out for as long as possible. If I ever do join I'll come and visit of course but my time has enough demands already! Love the latest fragment. Still think you're very brave with all the cutting ... but it was worth it!

I adore the encrusted texture on this and can see a Christening gown yoke inspired by this someday!

I think your pieces would make wonderful covers for hand-stitched books. Absolutely inspirational.
