For centuries women have used cloth as a tool of comfort and as an expression of beauty within their homes. Creating cloth for warmth, cloth for shelter, our female predecessors embellished these linens with hand stitch using laborious and time consuming techniques thereby enhancing the functional beauty of objects which enveloped and protected their families. Inspired by these women I hope my creations pay tribute to and recognise the devotion expressed in cloth by our female ancestors .

Commission

I finished my commissioned piece late last night and I am delighted to report that the customer loves it! I know that if someone approaches you with a specific request to make something for them from scratch it is probably safe to assume that they like your work, well even so, it doesn't necessarily stop the ''oh my goodness, will they like this, is this bit o.k.'' kind of angst. Happily though they appear more than delighted...phew, and thanks Virginia, it's been a pleasure. (mostly anyway, if you discount the sleepless nights!) I have photographed it from every possible angle to try and get a true reflection of the piece, even the obligatory folded images have been used. Somehow the flat, full image way below here doesn't do it justice, I hope these images give you more of an idea, a feel for the piece.

In the intervening minutes, whilst things have been damp stretching etc I have also made some of these. Guess what they will be? I am sure you will get it straight away I am so predictable!! So, as you can see I am still in ''Makey Do'' mode, producing for the fair. I have so many things I want to make, more dolls, more cushions, lots of buttons but it's back to work on monday, production will slow, it's inevitable. Hey ho. that's life. If I didn't work I don't suppose I could afford to go on a self indulgent jolly to the other end of the country to maybe sell zilch, zero, nothing, so there are advantages to the daily grind.

Enjoy what's left of the weekend, I am off to make dolls, buttons, puffs and pillows!!

Look Jenny, I'm making!

I promised you finished products and here we have finished products! My first batch of exclusively ''makey do'' products. (see Jenny, I told you I would get on with it!) These six pincushions won't be going in the shop, tempted as I am.I am also making amazing progress with my comissioned piece and I really hope to have this finished by the weekend. I made my paper lace

and here it is added to the now joined hexagons. Told you I had plans, I have been sending regular image updates to the person who asked me to make this, terrified I wouldn't come up to scratch, she seems really happy with how it's coming though....PHEW!!!

I have more plans, for the edge, and the whole thing should come together really well when everything is joined, backed and edged.

I had so many responses to my little paranoid outburst on monday, thanks everyone. It seems it is more than likely a computer glitch or someone leaving the computer to go on holiday or similar!! Funnily enough Jackie e-mailed me to say her stat counter had logged me as being on her blog for 23 hours!! So that's why I never get enough work done! I wish. So it seems I have nothing to fear...........fingers crossed! I've also recently had a lot of comments from people with ''no reply'' available, so I will reply here.....thanks so much for visiting....please enable a reply facility, please, pretty please, and to Claire (Australia) for some reason I couldn't access your comment facility, I just wanted to say what an amazingly beautiful little man you have there, congratulations.
Well that's the oscar speech finished, no tears either!

can't keep away!

Well I couldn't even last a week without posting, how sad is that? Thanks so much for all the birthday wishes, I had a brilliant day, lots of amazing presents, good food, good company, it was perfect apart from the fact that it went too fast! I got lots and lots of vouchers and have already used some of them to get myself some luxurious bubbles for the bath which I intend to use later tonight, that should keep the birthday feeling going a bit longer. I have been working too, it hasn't all been laziness and getting spoilt. We have a bit of image overload going on here but I really couldn't decide which one's to leave out, (thankfully, and I am saying this with everything crossed, my image editing programme seems to have got a new lease of life, must have been the threats of violence!!) So here is progress to date on makey do stuff. (if you want to be bored senseless there are more on flickr where you can comment on each picture individually)When I see you again these will be finished products so hang in there!
Now I have a bit of a searching question for my fellow bloggers and someone who's name I don't know. I noticed yesterday from my stat counter that one visitor, United Kingdom, no further information on location, had spent 217 minutes on my blog. The loudest voice in my head is saying they were just looking at all my archives because they enjoyed reading this blog. However, and call me paranoid, part of me (a small part) wonders if there were ulterior motives. I am not even sure I am getting this across properly but do you have those doubts with extra long visits??? and also, please, please, please, if you like it here so much I am really happy, truly I am but a little pleading....could you just leave me a little comment. I would like to get to know you, know what you think about my ramblings etc. I hope that hasn't offended anyone, yikes, I hope I haven't put my foot in it in big way, but I am so intrigued!!!
Tomorrow the birthday continues, I am going ''up north'' to visit family and get more presents, yes more presents!

A little break

Don't be too disturbed by my heading today, I'm only talking about one week max. It's my birthday on saturday and I have plans so I don't know when I will get to photograph again, get to finish things off etc. You know me though, blog addict, it won't be too long honest. I promised you progress pictures of my commissioned piece and here they are. It seems like such a long time since I created any patchwork, I had forgotten how much I enjoyed the tacking to card stage, very mentally unchallenging, a chance to ''veg out'' and think of anything, or nothing depending on your mood.
I still have some machine made paper lace to add to this before it can be put together. Infact I haven't even made the paper lace yet so that's another thing down to do on my tick list. These hexagons look quite ordinary and plain at the moment but have no fear! I have plans for when all the joining is done.

Remember I mentioned that my p.c. was very sick? Well I think it could be terminal and I am typing this with my fingers and toe's crossed. My photo editing software won't work, my internet keeps going to sleep, I fear for it I really do. I spend my time typing never knowing if it will all be lost so my next post may be imageless, a real catastrophe. I am apologising in advance whilst clinging on to a faint hope!!!
For the past couple of evenings I have been making a start on the big push for the Makey Do and next time I should definitely have some finished stuff to show you. In the meantime, to keep your creative juices flowing, check out these wonderful tiny works of art, gorgeous!
Have a great week, see you soon. x

No, you're not imagining things!

I know, I'm confused too, two posts in two days! This is due to two things, first, I have lists, lists that I tick when things are done. Number 1, 2 and 3 were finish doll 4, photograph doll 4, put doll 4 in the shop, on flickr and blog about her. I suppose that's more than three things but hey, I know what I mean!! So I can tick those off today, as opposed to tomorrow when I was going to do it. The second reason she is here today is because I was too excited, too excited to keep her all to myself, so here she is and also here where you can adopt her if you want. And don't listen to anyone who tells you I have a stack of ironing to do....it's not true...honest!!

She does have a lovely little headband on which for some reason I haven't managed to capture on my camera, but isn't she just adorable. I am going to find a special place at home for her and number three, incase I get to keep them both for a while.

I have also worked more on my commissioned piece since yesterday and I will show you that in the week. Thanks so much for coming back twice this weekend, it's appreciated! x
