For centuries women have used cloth as a tool of comfort and as an expression of beauty within their homes. Creating cloth for warmth, cloth for shelter, our female predecessors embellished these linens with hand stitch using laborious and time consuming techniques thereby enhancing the functional beauty of objects which enveloped and protected their families. Inspired by these women I hope my creations pay tribute to and recognise the devotion expressed in cloth by our female ancestors .

simple silk squares.....

Patchwork squares made with scraps of silk. Some have embroidered text, some just running stitch, some have basic appliqued bits of old cloth. This is one of those pieces that isn't too challenging, doesn't require concentration. It has been in  progress for years and I have absolutely no idea what it will become. It's quite big now...it is silk but I see a practical use. I am hoping to throw it in the washing machine if it gets dirty. It won't be precious, it will be used. A pram blanket? Maybe but you need a baby for one of them....and no....I'm not. Keep it for the eventual grand children then...as I say.......I really don't know.

Your running stitch is so exact and even and adds a crisp, pretty look to the silk squares. Lovely.

Well, problem solved! Keep going and I'll help you turn it into a Roman blind!

The squares are quite beautiful. Would this blanket have a backing like a quilt to hide the threads when in use.

prams are so much better a term then "baby buggy" - gentle.

Glad to hear I'm not the only one with projects on the go for years. Must get some of them finished. I found some applique pictures I was going to sew together for my daughter for her cot - she's now 26!!!!!!!

I'm sure it's use will reveal itself one day. Meanwhile, how lovely just to have it around.. like an old but quite exquisite friend.

I always think there is something very profoundly beautiful about any kind of patchwork.

I was going to suggest the Roman blind too, but I see someone already suggested that. Sometimes the pleasure in making something is in the doing, not in the using.
