For centuries women have used cloth as a tool of comfort and as an expression of beauty within their homes. Creating cloth for warmth, cloth for shelter, our female predecessors embellished these linens with hand stitch using laborious and time consuming techniques thereby enhancing the functional beauty of objects which enveloped and protected their families. Inspired by these women I hope my creations pay tribute to and recognise the devotion expressed in cloth by our female ancestors .

''the use of traditional often time consuming process alludes to the devotion of a mother''. c K. A. Ruane 2007

my pocket...

My pocket is finished...long and thin...24 x 3 inches....61 x 8 cm....now I am going to find a home for it. I need it to be visible and I know it will be in my bedroom, but where?

Oh wow! Does the opening go all the way down? It's beautiful, and I'm sure after a little consideration you'll find the perfect place for it

I sometimes find myself specifically not finishing things just so I won't have the headache of where to put them - need to break myself of that!

Where ever it ends up will be the perfect spot. A lovely keepsake.

Karen, once again you have created something that is beautiful and totally unique. Your pocket reminds me a pocket to hold a scroll or something equally as spiritual. Here I go again..... your work makes me emotional as you already know... :)

It's beautiful as is all your work.

Since most of your work seems to be based on historical reference, is the pocket also? Historically, what was its function? Or is this a little bit of Karen Ruane influence on the future's history?

I'd love to see your house...with all these beautiful pieces lying here and there.

I can see it hanging on the wall like a bell pull - on a beautiful cord. I love it!

I too wondered if it has a purpose other than simply looking absolutely DIVINE lol
But wouldnt it be a unique item for a bride to carry!
A shorter version might have a hand tied few flowers peaking out of the top.......though pollern on it would be wicked so maybe theyd have to be silk........lol
Its beautiful Karen!

I think I would hang it on the wall and then fill it with little pieces of paper each holding a quote or something that's important to me. Just my two cents worth!
