For centuries women have used cloth as a tool of comfort and as an expression of beauty within their homes. Creating cloth for warmth, cloth for shelter, our female predecessors embellished these linens with hand stitch using laborious and time consuming techniques thereby enhancing the functional beauty of objects which enveloped and protected their families. Inspired by these women I hope my creations pay tribute to and recognise the devotion expressed in cloth by our female ancestors .

new white

A new piece of white today. I embroidered heavily on this section with cross stitch and other hand embroidery in order to cover that particular piece of cloth as best I could. I don't really like this cloth. I bought it especially for my January class where I will be making another cloth in the same way as I made Helens white cloth. I am starting now to try and get ahead a little bit and I am spending some time trawling the internet for bits and pieces to use within the new white cloth. This fabric caught my eye, delicate, white and soft yet some kind of ''synthetic'' presence marking out the design is putting me off. I think I should maybe throw it in the washing machine. In fact I think I will definitely put it in the washing machine. As well as this piece I have bought lace hankies, cotton hankies with lace edges, whitework hankies and individual pieces of lace. This white cloth will be for my mum. I asked her for some scraps of fabric that held significance for her and she gave me silk hankies, but not white. That won't be a problem though, a white cloth with a sudden dash of Paisley patterned silk will I think look amazing.
This week is also the Knitting and Stitching show....I hope to buy supplies there too.
Do you remember that Monday was my ''life back to normal day''? Not sure it's working out like that but am also wondering how long I can blame it on jet lag. I don't remember how long it took me to get ''myself '' back after my last long haul flight....answers please.....never mind though, unusual sleeping patterns aren't the worst thing that can happen to me, I am counting my blessings.
I am counting my blessings too that you people are all so fantastic. I really can't believe the number of people who think I can teach them something about embroidery. My new button class is filling up amazingly and if you want to join us there is still time. Just click this link and you will get all the information you need. You could also mail me and ask too!! I'm here!! Always here, never go out of the house except maybe to the shed occasionally!!! (holidays don't count...husband drags me out!!)
and....even if you would hate to make buttons with me...your worst nightmare maybe, I think you should still pop over here and see the amazing things my girls created in our last class. Personally I think someone else must have come into class and taught them when I wasn't looking!!!!

Vibrant paisley patterns will make such a vivid contrast.
I'm hoping to get to Harrogate too..

I really love the cross stitch pattern that you have created on the cloth! Amazing work-and it seems that you are back on your game-at least as far as the embroidery goes!

Why don't you like the base of your new cloth?

It is difficult when ones sleeping rhythme is disrupted to get it back in order. You are probably holding your needle now all through the night, hihi.

Enjoy your time tonight.

Do class projects have to be in white and is there a place where i can see the supply list?

Hi Monica, class projects do not have to be in white and I send out a suggested supply list as people register for the class but generally most people seem to have most of the things they need, I hope this helps but if you need to know anything else then please get in touch, Karen

Lovely work on the new cloth. Splashes of colour can be great and I am sure you will keep them in balance. Your mum will be thrilled to see how you use the hankies.

I did enjoy your button class and am still trying to catch up with the ones I didn't master.

I'm starting to get excited about the January class now. I managed to find a beautiful linen (at least I'm pretty sure it's linen) tablecloth at a thrift store and will be using it somehow. Seems to me I have some battenberg (sp?) lace doilies around here somewhere too. Hmmmm.
