For centuries women have used cloth as a tool of comfort and as an expression of beauty within their homes. Creating cloth for warmth, cloth for shelter, our female predecessors embellished these linens with hand stitch using laborious and time consuming techniques thereby enhancing the functional beauty of objects which enveloped and protected their families. Inspired by these women I hope my creations pay tribute to and recognise the devotion expressed in cloth by our female ancestors .

evidence of being busy....

I may not physically have much to show for the last couple of days but I have been busy, honest...the piece I wasn't sure about, the white with cutwork and applique has been added to and is now damp stretching waiting to be bound. The silk with blue and white is in the process of being bound...half attached at the moment, tacked on from the back. The binding on this now just needs to be turned over on the front and I can set off on the actual finishing stitches.

My brain has also been ticking...about the shop. I have an idea,  a new product but I am pondering on the best way to proceed pattern wise, construction wise etc. My brain really isn't technical at all and things like turn overs and sizes of backs, fronts, sides etc leave me with a headache. It is a constant voice in my head however and surely I must get there soon???
and then there is this...this has been ongoing for a loooooong time. It's kind of a sampler cloth. I practised making buttonholes on it. I practised hooks and eyes and stitching on paper on it. I put a zip in it. I added text to the pocket. I stitched doilies onto it. I pleated silk for the edge of it....well yesterday I tweaked, I titivated and I put it in the shop...better there than gathering dust.
Today I have a mind to ruche more muslin and add it to that particular piece...

I don't any of us would doubt that you've been busy. Are you more in love with the cutwork and applique piece now? The sampler piece would tell a lovely story

Have you ever seen those carved ivory ball, seamlessly made from one chunk of ivory? ball inside of ball inside of ball and so on? Our family had one, I think we counted 17 balls.

The story of how they became so intricate, the balls that move freely from one another was that they were made by prisoners in China and their life was over when the carving was complete. Yikes.

Still the way we could see the inside balls was through windows, just like these lovely cutout ovals in your fabric that give view to the beauty below.... or inside.

love that sampler too~

stunning work Karen. i'm no good at describing but I just love the piece that looks to beautifully ironed without a single crease in site and all those lovely detailed little stitchy creations all over it.

I think that the buttons as brooches idea is an excellent one. I must get a corkboard thing like that for damp stretching one day - that's if I ever get back into embroidery on cloth rather than the beading I am doing atm on beading backing that does not need anything like that!

I love love love that sampler at the end... like one of the very old 'band samplers' that predate the traditional square-format+alphabet kind. I've been planning something around band samplers for many months now but seem to have too few hands and too little time...
