For centuries women have used cloth as a tool of comfort and as an expression of beauty within their homes. Creating cloth for warmth, cloth for shelter, our female predecessors embellished these linens with hand stitch using laborious and time consuming techniques thereby enhancing the functional beauty of objects which enveloped and protected their families. Inspired by these women I hope my creations pay tribute to and recognise the devotion expressed in cloth by our female ancestors .

decisions, decisions.....

Oh dear....the deadline, finsh date, finishing line for this body of work has been moved to April. Damn it! Some of you might think ''well that's a good thing'', not for me it isn't. The thing with me is that I ruminate, get disheartened, low on confidence with things. Waiting until  April gives plenty of time for me to get fed up with this work, question this work, wonder if it's good eneough, wonder if it could be better. By March it could even be in the bin. So what to do??? I could finish the pieces in progress and then put them away for a while, come back to them maybe at the beginning of February? I could stop now, don't take them any further? Actually probably not a good idea because then I will definitely have another idea by the time I come back. Oh well, there's only me that can decide so I will ruminate on that, let the cogs turn for a bit. To explain...this strip is now complete, the plan... add it to a plain piece of silk, titivate the edges and hey presto, a cushion front.

and then there is this. A piece spawned by the frst piece, another idea, moving it on. See that's a measure of what can happen here in a week never mind a couple of months. Maybe now you get a sense of why April is scary!! and also, a very important question....does the world have enough hooks and eyes for my indecision????

Might not be a bad thing to have a break from this, not immediately but when these two are finished. For a while now I have had a hankering for paper, pencil, maybe even paint but definitely paper. Remember I mentioned a design sheet recently? Well it's still there, chipping away at my consciousness, a yearning. Don't know where it came from or why it arrived but it won't go away. As far as plans go I'm aware that these are vague but vague is all I can manage at the moment, especially when the goal posts have been moved.
In other news.....
nailing the bedroom door shut didn't work. Daughter has gone, (insert very sad face)
and I have decided that I quite like the text centred on here so centred it shall be, for now anyway...

I love this. One of the first pieces I ever saw of yours had hooks and eyes, but this surpasses it(if that's possible)

I think it is beautiful. I think you should finish it as though the deadline has not been changed and then put it away in a closet until the deadline.

Don't understand why someone moves the deadline. I would think when you order something you can't wait to get your hands on it.
Oh well, I think it looks stunning and the idea with the hooks is fantastic.

I know what you mean about the additional time with the deadline. I would have changed the project three times over, started and stopped and then found myself a wreck at then end trying to finish an entirely new project! I would say go ahead and finish this and put it away, feeling secure and smug that you have it all done and ready. Then MOVE ON to new projects. When you bring it back out, you may find yourself pleasantly surprised at your abilities. In the middle of a project, it's far too easy to criticize it. Trust that all is well!

The hooks and eyes are wonderful. And, I know how sad it is when we have to leave our daughters or the other way around. At least these days we have email.

Hugs,
Lois

this piece is stunningly beautiful. I love all the detail.
perhaps don't feel concern over the project, though i know that concern can be a muse of sorts... make it and if something else comes along that you like better for it, sell the previous piece and keep chipping away at it.
your art is quite beautiful.
wishing you a wonderful 2011~

oh the dreaded decisions.Rather you than me, I'm terrible.
Beautiful work as always. Don't stress to much. A break may do you good and it sounds like you are itching to do the design sheet.

I thought of you on Thursday, my daughter was packing her things to go back to her house to celebrate her birthday that evening with her friends. I suddenly had an urge to run upstairs and lock her in, I kept it under control but knew that there was someone out there that knew how I felt. Still it's nice when they come back again for a visit. x

Oh my! oh my! oh my! I do love all of those delicate little french knots! What a divine cushion front this will be.

Good luck with the ruminating and I am sending a sad face...its sad when the children head back to their own lives. Just nailing the door wont work silly... you must have forgotten to nail the windows!!!

Happy ruminating.

I discovered your blog during the holidays and am amazed how you can make thread and cloth look like a treasured wedding cake. I love all these hooks and eyes and think the silk alongside will be quite lovely. Of course, I think a silky velvet would also be beautiful.

Too many ideas is never a problem IMHO. The usual problem is not enough time to try all the ideas out. Now you've got a bit more breathing space, why not do a few variations on a theme? The cushion says 'bedroom' to me so maybe you could do a matching tissue box cover? Or nightdress case? Or a cushion in a different shape - small bolster maybe? You could then let us (the readers) do some preferential voting maybe? Just an idea....

This quite takes my breath away.

You will find your way to make peace with this longer deadline, I know. You will take the time and something wonderful will happen.

Karen...You inspire me. You take simple white and develop it into an enticing complex piece that reminds one of snow, quiet, peace ... I could go on. Besides that other side of the brain where you did all this new stuff from blogspot.

More fascinating textures - how on earth do you have the patience for all those French knots?
