For centuries women have used cloth as a tool of comfort and as an expression of beauty within their homes. Creating cloth for warmth, cloth for shelter, our female predecessors embellished these linens with hand stitch using laborious and time consuming techniques thereby enhancing the functional beauty of objects which enveloped and protected their families. Inspired by these women I hope my creations pay tribute to and recognise the devotion expressed in cloth by our female ancestors .

patching and piecing my painted cloth

Thought I would start today with a contrived photo. I felt a burning desire to show you my lovely tins whether you want to see them or not. Whether you care or not that I have lovely tins! I have two of the button tins, exactly the same and there are no buttons in either of them, just a load of old stuff that I can't bear to part with. I also have another two pin tins, not like this one but another two pretty ones. Didn't want to overdo the tin theme though so we shall leave those out. The main even is the cloth in the picture. Another piece of crazy patchwork all pinned out, some areas worked on some not. I have used some of my painted fabric in this, what do you reckon?? These are the areas that still need work. There is a lot of tacking holding all this together so that explains any tatty loose threads you might notice.
The thing I love about crazy piecing is that you can just let loose, embellish and embroider away to your hearts content. I suppose it's a bit like colouring in and being allowed to go over the lines.

I started this piece on wednesday night as a ''thinking'' piece. I just wanted to enjoy working on cloth with no speciific aim except to clear my head. My mind has been all over the place this week and I wasn't up for making big decisions re books, purses or anything. It worked, I feel very focused today, I have ordered more purse frames including some large ones that I am hoping will be more like handbags. I will finish this first though then formulate a plan for other stuff because I did promise you another mini show and tell about books and I hate to let you down.
Thankyou too for the rush to buy my purses. There is still one left in the shop although it's a white one and you seem to prefer colour, something to bear in mind for next time. I have also moved some stuff from Big Cartel to Etsy and will probably close the Big Cartel shop. Etsy seems to suit me better for some reason. There are some of you who I owe e-mail to. I am on it honestly. I feel so bad sometimes that I am soooo slow replying to people. When the day comes that I never get a single comment or e-mail I will know the reason why and not be suprised at all. I promise I will beat myself severely and you will hear from me before the weekend is out. As for my sons trip to Sweden, well he went swimming yesterday in Lake Malaren. He said it was FREEZING. Those of you who are in Sweden will know how much of a bad idea that was, suffice to say I am expecting him to come home next week with flu! ( I know that cold environments don't really cause flu but I prefer him to have flu over frostbite!!)

Love the combination of the painted fabric with the embroidery and the tins. I, too, have lots of tins and have to hold myself back from buying more when I see beautiful ones in the thrift store.
I do respond to comments but I, personally, do not expect a response when I leave a comment though it is nice to get one. Don't put so much pressure on yourself. We will love you and your work no matter what.

OH! This one will be really pretty when you're done. I'm looking forward to some creative time late next week and I may do something like this to clear my mind from finals at school. HuGGs!

You must have a stash of white lace a mile high - it's always popping up!

It was with some interest that I looked for the aforementioned 'tatty loose threads' - and failed to spot any. All I could see was, as usual, beautiful stitches.

lovely, beautiful work and thank you so much for the comment on my blog. Life goes in peaks and troughs I know and some days/weeks are just harder.

Your work here is just so inspiring. I am about to embark on an intense month of making for a show coming up on the 19th July for 2 weeks and really, really need the therapy of making as it's been neglected because of other things!

Love the tins (I have some too!) :)
