For centuries women have used cloth as a tool of comfort and as an expression of beauty within their homes. Creating cloth for warmth, cloth for shelter, our female predecessors embellished these linens with hand stitch using laborious and time consuming techniques thereby enhancing the functional beauty of objects which enveloped and protected their families. Inspired by these women I hope my creations pay tribute to and recognise the devotion expressed in cloth by our female ancestors .

colour

I had planned more paperwork. Watercolour paper was obtained, paintbrushes found in the hidden depths of my cupboard, watercolour palette laid out, all set. Wrong! my mind just went blank...couldn't think of what to do, totally devoid of ideas. I looked at this huge piece of white paper for ages but nothing happened. It is said that there is nothing more off putting than a sheet of white paper and it's true. Why then does my brain work with a piece of white cloth, look! I really don't feel like I have done much of anything since I got back from London, a kind of weariness has descended that will only allow a very slow pace, it doesn't appear to be a wasted pace though. I am so happy with how this piece is evolving. Hand stitch is a very relaxing process, minimal effort physically and for some reason doesn't take much brain work either. This is what comes naturally to me, not paper and paint. I am determined to make that work though (the paper and paint). I plan to do a little research, not strenuous research mind you, merely a little magazine flicking, see where that takes me.

I created the large, central flower first, it's form inspired by the flowers on the vintage cloth I am using. Then I came a little unstuck because I really wanted to add to it but the piece of cloth I had cut was too small. So not one for letting anything beat me I added more cloth, joined the two pieces with buttonhole stitch, you can see that in these pictures.

Now I've finished the second part I feel the need to add something else so it will be back to adding another piece of cotton.
Finally.......I have been given the 'sunshine' award by Thea. Thankyou so much Thea, it's really appreciated!

Feel like I am repeating myself over and over again but each time I am amazed by the overpowering beauty and at the same time simple forms.

If you ask me, forget about the watercolor. Just do what you do best and love most, embroider.

Have a lovely evening.

Oh, and I am loving your collage.

I love how the little flowers reach over the buttonhole seam to the other fabric.

Spring has sprung! I love the way you've joined the fabric and the how the flowers have grown across

The unintentional seam looks like you planned it all along and really adds to the (very beautiful as always) stitching. I really like those embroidered flowers peeping through the holes.

I love the spring like quality of this and like the 'add it on' as needed idea! I have bought a book by Sandra Meech about connecting art to stitch which has some drawing exercises in it. I am planning to do some still lifes with lots of pattern as this is what I always enjoyed most- but the thought is a bit scarey! xx

Your work seems to spring into life when you just let it flow, no plan, no deadline, just pure creation. Mind you, don't give up on the collages-they are great ends in themselves too.

this piece is sweet and adorable. I love the seam you made and your flowers sprinkled about. Full of spring spirit. It makes sense to me that you want to relax and go slow after all the efforts you have put out recently. Take care.

Little peeks of Spring.
Water color will come when you decide to start. Meanwhile, these are wonderful.

This is going beautifully. I think you might find the watercolour will spark again later on, but in the meantime - Keep Stitching!

This new piece is looking wonderful. I love the addition of those little spring flowers you have sprinkled along the edge. Very much a spring feel to this piece.
Sometimes its nice to take it slow and easy ... you have had such a busy time.

Breathtaking! This piece is just lovely. Very fresh and spring-like.
Slow is good and inspiration will come for the painting.

absolutely gorgeous... Are we falling victim to ranking 'art' that is on paper/canvas, done with paint, higher than art done with cloth/thread? I wonder. Maybe you need the fabric to inspire you, and clearly, wonderfully, it does!

Hi Dee. In answer to the question.... absolutley not. Painting and drawing are just little personal demons I want to overcome.

ah, well that is a different ball of wax, altogether, then, isn't it? I wonder if there is a way to translate what you do with a blank piece of linen, to a blank piece of canvas? I'm restating your frustration, of course, but let me think aloud for a moment -- is there some analytical 'trick' that would span the media? I don't know. and I look forward to watching how it all goes.
