For centuries women have used cloth as a tool of comfort and as an expression of beauty within their homes. Creating cloth for warmth, cloth for shelter, our female predecessors embellished these linens with hand stitch using laborious and time consuming techniques thereby enhancing the functional beauty of objects which enveloped and protected their families. Inspired by these women I hope my creations pay tribute to and recognise the devotion expressed in cloth by our female ancestors .

Artwork revisited and 200th post give away!

I have been trying so hard to create some artwork as a means of moving my work forward........It is so hard! I was never very confident with pencil and paper or paint and paper, you name it, we didn't really get along. I always wonder how I managed to complete a three year art and design degree with masses of artwork required! Maybe it was a dream. The first two pictures here are of my latest feeble attempts. I really think this is rubbish, I don't know where I am going with it at all.
Then I had a bit of a revelation moment, get out your old stuff, it may help. So here we have some artwork from a time long ago when I felt I could at least make a half decent job of it. You will notice though that even with these it's not absolute art, exclusively paint and pencil. I am obviously only comfortable with needle and thread.

All is not lost though, just from examining this work I feel I can move on. I have started to embroider a new piece which will not be a wrapping cloth. The usual techniques, patterns and embellishments will still be there but these will morph into a different conclusion.

I hope to have some embroidery to share next time and then it may become clearer.
Now for the big drum roll (close your eyes and imagine).............this is my 200th post!!! It is such a massive milestone for me. I remember in the beginning how lonely it was in blog world, hardly any visits, never any comments and now, well I cannot believe how many of you are interested in my incoherent rambling! I can't imagine a bloggless life at all any more so I am sure I will get to 300, 400, and on and on and on.......In honour of the occasion I am going to have a give away...with a difference. For the winner I will make a piece of work to your specification. It can be any size up to 10 inches square, that's 25cm , (it is quite small but these things take such a long time!) using techniques seen on this blog. It can be all one technique or as many as you like. So leave a comment, tell me your preferred techniques and hey presto! I will draw the winner on september 30th.
Have a lovely weekend!

I would be pleased with anything you stitched. Having just completed an Access course, I now realize that it is not about great drawing or painting skills, its the creativity which counts.I nolonger feel ashamed of my drawing skills, which has allowed me to start an experimental drawing class.

Congratulations on your 200th post! Your new cut holes in the fabric look so fragile; I wonder how you are going to use them.

I enjoy looking at your work a lot - and that includes the drawings! I like their lightness and understatement, it´s thoughtenhancing and restful. Congratulations on No. 200 - I´ve just passed 50, and already don´t like the idea of a blogless life ...

Congratulations on your 200th post, it does feel lonely out there sometimes when you are blogging but I think it does help creatively to sort your thoughts out. Don't give up on the artwork I think it is lovely - keep at it. I like the photo 5th from the top - the techniques in that are lovely - the pinhole work and the petal shapes showing blue flower outlines underneath and then a darker blue stitching - really nice.

Congratulations on your 200th post - don't be unconfident about your artwork - what you've done in the past looks beautiful and very evocative - I'm sure its just a question of finding your feet with it again - and of course your finished embroideries are wonderful! and thats the main thing! - I would be over the moon to win a piece of your work - I especially like the pieces that use vintage embroidery and applique.

Thank you for sharing your lovely work, it is so beautiful.
The person who wins will be very lucky.
Draw as you would stitch also it some times helps to draw over a pale wash of water colour, not as intimidating as a stark white page.

Congratulations on your 200th post and the wonderful following you have gathered. I know I love visiting your blog to see what you are up to, your wrapping cloths are amazing!
I love everything you do (and do love those where a splash of colour comes through - such understated elegance). Love your cutwork with vintage embroderies and lace, those wonderful knots, the text... love the text too and those hooks and eyes you used were fantastis.... Ohhhh too much you say, that will never fit on a piece that size.
Dont worry, if I'm lucky enough to win I will love anything you make.
Looking forward to many, many more posts and cant wait to see your latest piece developing.
