For centuries women have used cloth as a tool of comfort and as an expression of beauty within their homes. Creating cloth for warmth, cloth for shelter, our female predecessors embellished these linens with hand stitch using laborious and time consuming techniques thereby enhancing the functional beauty of objects which enveloped and protected their families. Inspired by these women I hope my creations pay tribute to and recognise the devotion expressed in cloth by our female ancestors .

Pinned, Tacked and Ready to Go

I have all the hooks and eyes stitched on now. So far the two sections are only pinned and tacked together ready to be introduced to the sewing machine. I don't think I will do this for a couple of days yet, I feel like I need to clear my head first and I still haven't decided on edges yet. Should I make loops, prairie points, should I leave them plain?? Also, this piece has turned out much larger than I anticipated so any edge I decide on is going to take quite a while to make. This work has survived a trip down the motorway today, I took it to show a friend and maybe get a bit of feedback, she only had good things to say and we kind of half decided that maybe this cloth shouldn't go in the shop but be entered in a competition that's coming up. I probably will do that, there is a bit of a backlog in the shop at the moment, (what am I missing?)

Here you can see where I have attached the embroidered cotton tape to the applique panel, it really finishes it off well. I can't get a picture of the full thing yet, I need to be gentle with it because as it's only pinned it's still a little fragile.

I really love the way these pleats fall half open now they are fastened, it softens the appearance of the hooks and eyes too.

For the next couple of days I am going to doodle, nothing specific, play around a little bit, no pressure, I am a bit weary at the moment, keep checking back to see what I come up with allthough don't get too excited...I may have a nightmare!!! (creatively speaking)

I agree, this should most definitely be entered in a competition!

I am, as always, completely enthralled!

I knew it would look stunning with the hooks and eyes in complete rows! Competition is a really good idea, and you can put this cloth in the shop afterwards.

I would have never thought that the humble hook and eye could be art work, and yet it is. Oh I like this entire piece.
